Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.
Probably. I don't worry too much about it. I'm just grateful I was warned! And you're right: Bean-Boromir was perfect. Boromir's death scene gets me everytime. The sound of the bow, the "snorting" of Lurtz, the slow motion, the acting... Unbelievable!

We've gotta go there sometime ... I looked at the menu, and it looks pretty durn good!
It was exhausting, yet wonderful. At least as good as I expected and in some ways a lot better. Gollum is well worth all of our waiting and he managed to get more than just contempt from me, believe it or not. I felt pity, anger, frustration and at one point, I even thought he was cute in a sad kind of way.
The Balrog battle was awesome. I cannot wait to see it again. As with a lot of things in the movie, you will definitely have to see it more than once to get the details.
Helm's Deep was much more powerful to me personally after seeing it on-screen. Like Hair, I have a hard time picturing the battle and PJ put it across perfectly. You could actually feel the despair of the women and children in the caves - your shoulders become tense preparing for the breach of the final door into the heart of the old fortress. Oh, and yes, I laughed in spite of myself everytime (yes, it happens more than once) and elf screams like a woman as they go down in battle.
I could have had a bit more of the Ents, but to be fair, I could have had a bit more of everything! Alas, that is what the Extended DVD Version is for.
The flying Nazgul are terrifying. Those fell beasts are absolutely horrid, but fascinating to look upon. And the Wargs! *shudder* And the oliphants = WOW!!!!
OK, I know it's short, but I am soooo tired and I do have to get up and go to work in the morning briefly before heading to see TTT again! ;)
Oh, Glen and I were about the 5th couple in line so we got fabulous seats! And there was a lot of applause throughout the movie at certain scenes, even from those who looked like they were dragged along by a LoTR fan-friend.

I watched it again this evening while I cleaned and prepared foodstuffs for Christmas company. Envious of all who are watching the TTT right now!
I had a thought that I never had before, but I'm sure others probably have. If Boromir had not tried to take the ring when he did, then Frodo would not have run off right then, and very likely been captured by the Urukis (Iraqis - coincidence, I don' know, lol Saruman Hussein? lol)
Anyway, strange that Boromir, in his act of 'ringlust' might actually have helped to save his people after all. Who knows? Really looking forward to the TTT tomorrow night, uh, tonight!
Frustration here - we went some distance to go to one of the better houses in KC (Westglen in lenexa) and the damned thing cut out THREE TIMES during the movie. Abd at some pretty inpoortune times, I might add. Imagine scaling ladders rising up to Helm's Deep's walls, Uruk-Hai screaming - and then the picture goes blank and the lights come on.
So it is difficult for me to really evaluate what I saw just now.
Idle observations:
The missus found Gollum annoying - she actually used the dread term "Jar Jar Binks." Personally I found him dead on in terms of what I visualized from the books.
On the other hand she found Aragon/Viggo hotter than ever. She nearly fainted during the mash session with Arwen on the divan.
Battle scenes were...well, simply brilliant.
If there are any preliminary kocks on the movie, I think I had some difficulty buying the Ents. I think also the lack of a beginning or end make it an odd experience, even if it was an expected one.
Otherwise, the only real complaint I have is that I cannot see Return of the King RIGHT NOW.
If Helm's Deep was this good, I can only imagine what the siege of Minas Tirith will be like.
Well, at the last minute I decided to do the nutsy thing and drive a long way to a strange town for a midnight viewing. I found a closer one yesterday afternoon (only and hour and a half away), and at about seven this evening I decided I couldn't stand it and we went! Took a bit of convincing to get Dad to let me take the kids - they're homeschooled, so that wasn't a concern, but he didn't like me driving that late. Worked out, though - how could I sleep after THAT!
Gotta get to bed - quick comments: Gollum is SOOOOO cool! Wow! I've never been able to identify with his character until now. Sam just keeps getting better. Eowyn and Eomer didn't disappoint. I don't know yet how I feel about some of the additions - don't get why they hadda do that. And I didn't like them using Gimli mostly for comic relief. The Ents were marvelous, but there wasn't nearly enough of them - or Merry and Pippin.
Gotta sleep now - it's after five!
The switching between stories was a bit noisome (cutting to the Ents during the Helm's Deep battle is like switching to the Ewoks during the Luke/Vader duel! argh...) and the narration by Galadriel seemed unnecessary.
These objections will likely fade with repeat viewings.
The "author" was making parallels between Tolkein's work, and the progression of the industrial era. Essentially, likening Aragorn and his kingship to the current Bush administration, and Sauron's forces as the "freedom fighters". You can skip a lot of the mucky-muck, and just jump to page 4...that's where the real socialist meat is.
