Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I ate some chicken wings from Pizza Hut last night...wasn't thinking. They always make me have a terrible time and I nearly didn't get to go to church this morning because of it.

I was never a scary pierced punker, only what a kid could get away with in the 80's in a reasonable family. I had kind of spikey Joan-Jet mullet-kind of thing goin' on.... and I was allowed two holes in my ears, but I would put the old-fashioned screw-type earings all the way up my ears so it looked like I had more!

Well, these attempts at outrageous noncomformity are getting boring.

I classify myself as a noncomformist...a true one. I hate it, struggle against it, desire only to fit in but don't fit in to any situation without great effort. People who revel in their so-called "noncomformity" are just putting on a show.

She's a just-pre-baby boomer, and in a lot of ways she embodies some of the stereotypes people of my generation have about the boomers. She really has a hard time understanding that the world does not revolve around her; she cannot "move on" with her life; she does not connect to people; and she has no concept of saving. She will be forced to work for years more because she didn't save for retirement.

Honestly... I just don't have many good memories about her. That's very sad, but true.

I eat them even though they usually tear me all up. I don't care. LOL Some things in life are just "worth it".

I am glad Jen! - You need to be nice to your Grandmother! Her life has been interesting, the changes she has seen!

About 20 years ago I bought my Grama one of those books that grandparents fill in for grandkids that tell about their lives. My grandparents had awesome stories. But, it was so funny getting Grama to fill in the book. One question was, "What is the most wonderful technological advance you've seen in your lifetime?"

Her answer was "Pre-colored margerine"

WHAT????

And then she told this long story about how when margerine first came out as a sub for butter everybody was used to yellow butter but the margerine was white like shortening so it came with this packet of dye that you had to mix in to make it all yellow.

Only thing was the margerine was real hard - harder than stick margerine is now so it was a tough job to mix the dye. I asked her why they didn't just use it without the dye and forget mixing if it was all that bad. She said, "Well you couldn't do that because then the margerine wouldn't taste right. The dye didn't have any flavor but yellow tastes better than white."

All I can ever think of when that comes up now is yellow snow! oooooo sick!

There is a difference between style and "nonconformist" attempts...they buck style.

I had one ear pierced twice, and one once. And I had the spikey topped hairstyle too, for a while... with the sharp looking points in front of my ears. Back in the 80s.

No, I didn't think that. But, I did figure you'd get a kick out of our issues. First of all, do you think people in my church have ever seen the belly button ring???? And second, do you think I'd REALLY let my kid go to church looking like a street walker? But, we are more unique than most folks in a little country church, so they have to talk. I don't think most of them know I have tattoos. That will be really bad if (or when) it gets out.

That would have been a shame. Look what you'd of missed. Chocolate covered donuts and purple hair. LOL That was in order of importance!

I did dream that you had really red hair in the Entmoot dream...I saw you with it (maybe brown) on your profile, I think. So, even though I know you have blonde hair now, I must have been impressed with it.

One day a couple came into our church. He was over fifty and wore his hair in a shoulder-length ponytail, and had trouble remembering to watch his language. She was thirty-five, a career woman, looked like a NOW postergirl (except for not being a lesbian). They rode motorcycles and he drove a Corvette, and they'd only just become Christians. Two jobs, no kids

We're a homeschooling family with seven kids. Dad was a church elder at the time. Mom could have been transplanted from the 18th century. While we don't dress as strictly as many homeschool families, we still have certain codes...

You would never have thought that they would have become our family's best friends. They like to 'borrow' kids sometimes, since they enjoy young people, they just don't want any of their own. And it's a good thing my parents didn't judge on looks like a lot of people there, because they're just cool. We took them to Hawaii with us a couple years back.

Isn't it funny how churches work? The people who look as though they most need attention and help, we tend to shun as "not our sort, dear." Not very Christlike...

On the other hand, you should at least remove your bellybutton rings before service.

I'm just a boring old '70's child. In the '80's I looked just like I did in the '70's except my hair got longer. Piercing and tattooing was the biker thing to do in the heavy metal '70's too. It seemed like it got more mainstream in the '80's. Still, I have never had a desire to have anything removed. It's not like you can see anything when I dress for work.

Yes! That is exactly the kind of stuff I mean! Pre baby boomer means she remembers war rationing and WWII, if not WWI. She remembers not having a television. She remembers 'colored only' drinking fountains. She remembers a president being assassinated, and she remembers man landing on the moon. But also the little things like pre-colored margerine!

I know there are people who are hard to get along with, but there are people worth the effort of knowing because they are your roots, and soon will be gone. The memories they have are much more interesting than a history book when you will share them with your own kids.

I had a ball learning about my grandmother's early years, and the memories she had of her own parents before her. I was able to write much of it down before she died, and I treasure it.

I left my hair red for 24 years. I liked it that way. But, I had a whim. And then I was blonde. after 24 years of red.

Well, I know there are people that have a "style" and that's fine...but I also believe that there are people who are just "attention-seeking", which is what I believe this lady was up to. Her whole demeanor was like a performance, to draw attention to herself. I didn't hardly pay any attention to her, other than notice her hair which you couldn't miss.
