Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Great pic; that could be any number of places in the Ozarks and several places in SE Kansas. I like the woods (except when trees are falling on the house! But I'd need a clear area for the vegetable garden.
To: Overtaxed
I think you could share the 20 acres with the squirrels.... you know.... the harmony and respect for nature thing.
To: HairOfTheDog
Grumble, grumble, grumble....I'll show 'em some respect. Probably have those danged prarie dogs too!
To: Overtaxed
Oh yeah...I can hear it now: "the roof leaks"...."there's mud oozing through the walls"... I'm not listening to that all day!Oh, but we'd be fine and estimable hobbits!! Not at all like the Sackville-Bagginses!
To: Overtaxed
Are there any dogs bred to herd chickens? What a thought! Hmmm... how about a sheltie or a welsh corgi? They're the smaller herding dogs.
To: Lil'freeper
... how about a sheltie or a welsh corgi? They are such cute doggies! Their body shapes remind me somewhat of long haired dachshunds. The shelties' faces, though, look like little tiny collies.
To: SuziQ
No block-headed Bracegirdles from Hardbottle?
To: Lil'freeper
Would they eat the chickesn?
To: osagebowman
it could give you an opportunity to have "free range chickens"; would a cat help in herding and roundup? I think throwing food out helps with the herding and roundup of chickens!
To: HairOfTheDog; Lil'freeper
Speaking of collies, do people still have them for pets? I just realized it's been years since I've seen anyone with a collie. Labs, terriers, goldens, and the little boutique dogs like Shih Tzus and Lhasa Apsos seem to be the more popular breeds these days.
To: Overtaxed
No block-headed Bracegirdles from Hardbottle?Absolutely not! With this group, however, you'd have to plan for a few dwarves, elves, and Gondorians.
To: SuziQ
You're right, they aren't all that common, the little shelties are more common. You still see collies at dog shows... they seem to be a specialty breeder/fancier dog.
But a friend has two and is showing them. Remember the pics a while back that I took when she was showing?

Her dogs are gorgeous but dumber that a box of rocks.... I think the dog show fanciers, as in other breeds, have bred the herding instinct out of them in their quest for appearance over proven ability. They don't work like border collies still do, which is why many working Border Collie enthusiasts fought against their admittance to AKC.
To: SuziQ
I'll need a pastoral Shire setting, forested Rivendell/Lothlorian section, import a few mines, and fit a grand city all on 20 acres?
To: Overtaxed
Hello!
Steve is taking a nap. I wanted to go fishing again, but nobody else did. I may go by myself here in a bit.
Sigh...

I think I will grace the Borders with my presence this afternoon! Well, for goodness sake! Be careful!
To: HairOfTheDog; JenB
You have to forgive her for taking your room, Jen. I agree Jen. Not for Grandma's sake. For your sake.

Guess I could always rais Buff Orpingtons. Well when you order enough for your 20 acres, would you please send a couple small ones to 2J?

Speaking of collies, do people still have them for pets? I had a collie when I was a little kid, until he ate the neighbor's lawn furniture.

Hehehe....it'll be a while.
