The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hi. Back from the park. We flew kites, unsuccessfully, and then biked or bladed. And now we're preparing dinner... a nice meat fondue. Quite a nice day.

After dinner I think I'll try to get some writing in...

Does that help with the more 'musical' problem that occurs with eating beans?

We've had very good results doing beans that way, now that we're eating them again.

That must be the place (I don't think it was actually on a dock, but it was on the lakeshore). And I think the name of it might have been "Mimosas". I remember by Brother-in-law calling it that or talking abou the mimosas -- which I had never heard of before.

He had a little fishing cottage on the very north end of the lake, and we went around the lake to get to this place.

I keep thinking about it. I think the name of it was Spinnakers. I used to live over near the dam. On Hudson Bend. I worked at Lakeway at the Water District. Everybody know that place for it's Mimosas!

It's THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT. It stars Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson.

We didn't go get it. She's reading Sense and Sensibility. And I took a nap.

Re the bean soak. I've found that soaking in warm water to which 2-3 Tbs of lemon juice have been added over night really helps. The acidic environment breaks down the less digestable parts of the seed coat (don't ask for the mechanism, it is eluding me at the moment) and does not affect the flavor significantly.

Okay, now does this help with the gas or with getting rid of black bean bitterness? For gas I also cook them with dried mustard.

both. Mustard is a variation on the same theme as it is full of salicylic acid. (it's what makes it hot...)

How about if you just cook 'em with aspirin?

I'm sure the dwarves would eat it...kind of a two-birds-with-one-stone thing. ;p

I'm not sure how this long-haired dachshund thing all came about but there is something wrong about breeding a dog with 2 inch legs who's hair grows 2 inches a month.

Sounds like an animated dust mop. :)

Exactly right!!! She has half her hair and tummy hairballs left. I got halfway done and she was very good. Then she was trembling so bad I bathed her and gave her a break. Will finish tomorrow or the next day.

She did get a fried egg for being so good.

I didn't know mustard had salicylic acid. I will have to look into that. All the plant or just the seed? Lots of mustard grows at my old place. Does a tea of it help joint pain? I wonder?

Hmmm...how about using cayenne pepper? Lots of capsaicin.

Well, here is the cat 'done', or at least, after having had a job *done* *on* him! I didn't think to get a "before" picture (doh!) but picture a really long-haired orange cat.

No amount of drugs was going to make him completely compliant, so we did as good a job as I could.... There are a few patches of long hair here and there left on him, and his body has this sort of a corduroy look to it because I used those comb guides to not take all the hair off, but leave a half-inch. It is hard to get it to come out good with those. I think he will look better in a couple weeks.

I at least got his neck and belly good, which is where he had the longest hair that would get matted.

I have the scars to prove it. (Not too bad, really, considering what I did to him!)

Not too bad! - I have had worse!

The drugs we gave him had an interesting effect, instead of making him go to sleep, it made him drunk and crabby. Kindof like a mean drunk instead of a fuzzy pushover!
