The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I don't suppose the train goes through Pittsburgh...

Actually it does. When you get on in Pitt you'll likely end up going through Philly on your way to NYC then South. I don't know though, there may be a train that goes South from Pitt. I know the City of New Orleans goes South from Urbana/Champaign IL to NO, but I'm not sure about the area in between there and here on the East Coast. You could pop on the Amtrak website and check it out. We could take the Acela to DC for a little faster ride, but it's the slow train from there on down to FL. If you bring a book and some snacks, it can be a fun ride.

In 1995, I rode the train from Worcester to Birmingham; it took a little over 24 hrs., and if I hadn't had the worst case of bronchitis I think I've ever had, it might have been a lot more fun! Actually, I was fine on the way back home. Clare was 7 and Joseph was 5 at the time and they had a blast! Joseph wandered up and down the aisles of our car, and when he found anyone with a laptop, started up a conversation with them about computer games.

But the sad part is just how darned ineffective we were...

We sounded like Bilbo and the dwarves, figuring out how to rip off Smaug. It might have worked, but it wouldn't have been pretty.

Well, us dwarves don't do pretty. And I'm not so sure about the "might have worked" part...

Yeah, I took the "slow train" from DC to Florida once. It's kinda cool; you can put your car on the train and then you don't have to worry about renting.

Are you sure it goes to New York before going south? That sounds really bizarre.

Take the last train to Clarkesville,
I will meet you at the station.
You can be there by 4:30,
'cause I've made your reservation...

(bonus to Jen if you get the reference...)
