The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

"Tehran, Beruit, and a couple of other places like that" are not good places to have offices!

I witnessed many of the eruptions that were visible from anywhere, and on May 18, my Dad and I were at Yard Birds, a 1980 version of Wal-Mart, in the fishing section, where we stopped and listened to the news of it on the radio that was behind the counter. On many other occasions, we got dusting of ash from the mountain, but nothing really from the big one.... the wind took it east, not north. Day turned to night in Yakima and Spokane. We were much closer, but watching it on the news.

Not too long after the big one, my mom chartered a little plane that took us up and around the sight-seeing route. The pilot let me fly, and I decided to become a pilot.

Amazing to me was the quantity of mud and ash.... the contents of most of a mountain covers a lot of ground. An uncle on the Toutle River had a few feet of the stuff. Other places in the national forest have many many feet of it still today. Mountains of it were piled in the corners of parking lots.

And the natural wonder of driving, at that time through the miles miles and miles of toothpick forest. trunks standing but stripped. And closer to the blast, the trunks knocked flat.

The Volcano Observatory at Johnson Ridge is truly neat... I like to go every few years just to track over time the changes, and what the natural recovery looks like. It is a huge laboratory, where you can look on one side of the road, where the forest was re-planted, and on the other side of the road, a big tract of land left alone.... just to see what happens.

This is the observatory at Johnson Ridge:

And this is the live cam:

Link to live cam if that one doesn't update: VolcanoCam

It is neater in July when the snow is gone and it looks grey and menacing still.

That's cool! Of course, that all happened before I was born. But I love pictures of before and after.

I remember the cacaphony of those worried about how this disaster would ruin the landscape for hundreds of years. Then, they were surprised when grasses and flowers were growing within in just a couple of years. Folks just continually underestimate the power of the Earth to heal itself.

Ecofreaks use anything to their advantage. They're really a religious, rather than science, oriented bunch.

I've got a bag of Mount St. Helen's ash around here somewhere......

Back from the reunion. The ribs were a hit although a cousin was going to do a shoulder and didn't because he thought I was going to do it. Oh well.

It's raining on my seeds now. Yay!

Heh.... lots of people have little bags or vials of St. Helens ash! - I had an "ash tray" made from pottery with ash in it.

I posted a Mt. St. Helens thread:

May 18: Anniversary of major Mt. St. Helens eruption - 23 years later: Live Volcano cam!

But then if I put it in the garden, I can't show it off to people.

So if I put one of those in the garden and leave it there, will it dissolve into the soil like one of those poo-pets?

We have two blown glass Christmas ornaments made from the ash. They're our favorites.
