The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

SO God vaporized Atlantis? Interesting! - Considering San Fransisco still stands, they must have been *really* being bad!

Sure, but SF is on a bad fault line. OTOH, South Beach in Miami is not. Could be a hurricane, though.

I thought that to be a good rejoinder (Atlantis), not that it had much point!

I saw "libertarian" mentioned over there, so was hoping a flame war might develop.

Do you live near a fault line?

I just heard thunder.

There's a severe weather warning west of Ellensburg. Might be close.

I bet Jen doesn't even know sometimes a 5 hour drive makes us achy. But, I'm trying to figure out how she reads so fast. She must have been a poster child for speed reading!

I didn't ever send the soil sample. I was going to try planting unkillables there first. Actually, I figured if I could get something to grow there just the organics would improve the soil.

Portulaca. When I was growing up we always called it Moss Rose. I don't know it might have another name too. Almost looks like a succulent. Low growing ground cover type plant. Bright flowers. Nothing real fancy but grows like a weed. Hopefully it'll grow like a weed in the dead zone. It's an annual though. I don't generally go in for annuals for flowers.

Thanks, Sam and everyone else for the Mother's Day greetings! I slept in this morning and SSQ and the kids woke me up at 10 with a cup of coffee and 2 of the most gorgeous Calla Lily plants I've ever seen. The blossoms are a dusky purple!! It is the color I want to use in our new Master Bathroom! I had already ordered my Mother's Day gifts, but they have not arrived, so he got me the plants and the cutest card I've ever seen.

I'm on IM with our #2 son right now. He had to do something for a minute, so I'm waiting for him to come back online.

Hope all you Moms had great days as well!!

Yum! I want some venison and peppers!

Actually, the storm chasing wasn't me. Myranda got me into that. She is not an academic whiz at school. But, when she was 11 she decided she wanted to get her amateur radio license. My uncle and aunt were hams and she wanted to do that. So, we did it together. My uncle was our local radio club president also. We lived in a rural county northwest of Waco so a lot of our chasing was looking out for the folks in Waco. It just so happened that our house was about 1/4 mile from one of the choice lookout spots in the county so that was "our" spot.

Prior to Myranda developing interest in radio and weather watching all I did was enjoy storms from the inside of the house. Or occasionally out in a nice summer storm. But, storm chasing was not something I thought of on my own.

That's so awesome! Coffee in bed, card and calla lilly.

I have to tell ya'll though. I was wrong in what I posted about Myranda this morning. She is terrible about remembering gift giving occasions so I wasn't expecting her to remember. Usually, we get to church, someone is handing out flowers or something to moms and she gets all upset because she didn't know.

Well, this morning, before daylight while I was sound asleep, I thought I heard her come in my room. I turned over to see but it was dark and she was gone so I thought it was just a cat outside or something. Well, I got up, freeped a while, had hot tea, and then got her up to get ready for church. She looked at me expectantly and I asked her what was up. She is totally broke trying to get her school for next year paid for but she got up at 5:30 AM so she'd be sure and be up before me, went outside and cut the prettiest white rose on her rose bush, then added honeysuckle and mint so it would be a nice scent adventure and made me a corsage. She placed this right beside the bed so I'd see it soon as I woke up... but, I didn't turn the light on and didn't see it. But, the big thing was, she wrote me a poem on a small poster. Telling me all kinds of mushy stuff about me being her mom. WOW. She ain't never done nothin' QUITE like that before. I had tears.

I hate it when that happens. the tears - not the stuff.

I wonder if you'd keep a lookout for a couple of books for me. I need a Solution's Manual for the Paul A. Foerster "Algebra and Trigonometry" textbook, and I'd like a copy of Foerster's "Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry". If you see those in your travels, could you let me know where you found them and I could call the store? I found a copy of the Alg/Trig book, '99 Ed., and the solutions Manual is the 91 or 94 ed. but is compatible with the newer text.

Thanks!

It's a celosia. But, one would look so lonely in my yard, so I also bought another 6 pack of those while I was at the store.

Any old excuse, right?

I wonder how dangerous that is. Is that little orange square your house? Just kidding.

Yeah, there's a lot of fault lines around there.

What kind of fish are in that water?
