The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Sam & Hair; back now and btw, that is a cool site, I'm always finding a certain place on the ground from a map or aerial photo, laid out north south, like a usgs 7.5 minute quad map, the topo map will all use for hiking or trail rides etc. My compass is a Silva Ranger which does have a screw setting for declination, based on the region of the country you are in, once set for an area, the mag north and true north appear to be the same. invaluable in finding old survey or easement lines. Two types are available, 0-360 degrees, and 90 degree quadrants for when bearings are given as N30E or S18W.

But I am thinking seriously about picking up a gps unit, could help out quite a bit, but am a bit of luddite. :-)

650 pages. The first 300 are great. There are some eerie September 11th parallels but the author's note say they were there beforehand...

Anyway, it's really really good so far.

Down with Flat Stanley- that's all I've been hearing. Was telling my Bro-in-law about the FFrodo project and he said "Oh, like Flat Stanley!". My mother said the same. Phooey on Flat Stanley.

An excellent explanation, a picture is worth a thousand words! I read the thing, too.

Do you plot your flight plans on some kind of a chart, one that presumably gives magnetic headings along the course line?

Hair is too. But GPS is amazing. Not expensive either.

Sam; yes, that is the reason ($) that I'm looking at them now, when they were $1K and needed a backback, it was easy to shine them on but at $150 or so (I know without the "options") for a hand held unit the size of my binocs, well, I've got space in my vest for that. :-).

Here's where I left yesterday...gonna catch up now for everyone's viewing entertainment.

Wedding was a lot of fun. You know it's going to be a good reception when the bride is a dancer (she choreographs our church productions) and the groom is a chef. However, Corin had enough wine last night to forget why he doesn't dance like he used to (he did NOT bite his lower lip...). Today his knees are reminding him.

Went to church this a.m. Then the boys "took Mom out to lunch." Well, sort of. Grandma sent money to Jr. to take Mom out. So he picked Kabuto. It's a favorite, but we don't go there often. Grandma sent about half the money to cover the bill, so Dad pitched in. However, Jr. has been placed on notice. He's still a finicky eater. (Luke will eat anything). So we go to Kabuto and Jr. eats the meat and the rice. No soup, no salad, no vegetables. When he still qualified for the kid's meal, that was okay. Today we paid $18.95 for him to eat chicken and rice.

Came home and took a short nap. Actually had a parent of one of my wife's students call. On Sunday. On Mother's Day. In the middle of nap time. Get a life woman. Actually it's okay, but when she calls she's at least a 45 minute conversation for the Mrs.

Then Luke and I went to the gym. Mrs. is grading research papers. Jr. can't find his key with his membership tag (I think he conveniently can't find it). Luke loves to go play in the Kid Zone while Dad works out.

Oh, and one other thing. We turned off the cell phone during the wedding ceremony. But we checked on the way to the reception. We had a voice mail from Jr. marked "urgent." He was at home alone (Luke was at the sitters).

The "urgent" message"

Where is the X-Men DVD?

(I'm kind of taking this also from the 45 year old body I've got that doesn't quite do things the way it used to.)

Okay, so it gets pretty filthy, but Bette Middler's "Mud Will Be Flung Tonight" album has some great lines. She talks about losing weight and working out.

Then she says "I was asking my body to do things it hadn't done since the Senior Prom..."

Corin- the most well-done steaks are on top. You better get one quick before they're all gone and you have to have one that will make you puke.

I should clear that up. I prefer my beef well done. But having it medium doesn't make me ill. And I can even "enjoy" it rare when the social situation requires it.

But I just can't tolerate the thought of raw, or undercooked chicken.

(and I only do "fish free" sushi - like the cucumber rolls...)

Maybe I should suggest that they have some pork barbecue?

Oh yeah. That'll make things friendly. Get a barbecue discussion going...Point 'em to some Lembas posts so they get the idea.

(Jr. is now watching X-Men in French)

Yes.... amazingly few samples online of actual aeronautical charts, but here is one for Cleveland, unfortunately, without a decent legend that would explain what the symbols are.... but maybe you can figure out enough for it to be interesting.
