Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.
The guy illustrating the Hedge Knight comic is a conservative:
ST: What kind of music do you listen to while you're working? What inspires you?MSM: Actually, I don't listen to music very often. When I do, it's usually Mozart because it's the only CD in my boom box right now ... When I have a choice of CDs, I usually pick time-tested stuff, like Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, big band stuff or classical. I don't know why, but after high school, I got really tired of 'modern' music. 'Pop' not only bores me to tears, but it's got a shelf life that makes spending 18 bucks on a CD seem like a tremendous waste of money. I have these racks of CDs that I never listen to ... So now I usually listen either to my Bible tapes, Christian radio or teaching tapes, or talk radio; Sean Hannity and Michael Savage to be specific. I prefer learning something while I'm drawing. Seems like a better use of my time.

Illustrations (especially comic books) increase the chances of a story getting made into a movie. John Millius was introduced to Howard's Conan through the 70's comics... and Peter Jackson was inspired to make the movies by the art of Howe and Lee.
If you'd like to see A Song of Ice and Fire adapted for the screen, support the artwork now. Ask your local comic store to order The Hedge Knight (distributed by Image). It will run 6 issues and be out in August.

P.S. If you missed it, there is a chapter from the next book in the back of the A Storm of Swords paperback.
Yep, it is the same story from the Legends anthology. The next Dunk & Egg story, The Sworn Sword will appear in Legends II -- scheduled to be in stores by January 2004.
If there is demand for THK books. They will start doing A Game of Thrones.
Mike is basing most of his characters off of Amok's portraits.
An example of this is the cover Mike is working on for the ASOIAF RPG. (an earlier version)
I'll keep my eye out for a good comic store
Check The Master List to find a a comic store in your area.
Just got back from Amherst. I'm so glad we did this instead of the big graduation. We got to see Paul have his name called, cross the stage and get his honor cord. We were very proud! As it was there were over 700 Honors graduates today! It only took 2 hours with speeches and all, so that wasn't too bad.
The main speaker was an Antropology professor who started off very doom and gloomish about the propects for the world, with war and a faltering economy looming over the new graduates. Then he started in about the monies for higher ed in MA being SLASHED! SSQ just looked at each other and laughed. What a maroon! No one wants to hear that kind of silliness at a time like that.
The other speaker was a graduating senior; a young Russian immigrant who moved to the US after the fall of the Soviet Union, and recently became a naturalized citizen. He was very positive and spoke about freedom, but gently reminded us how we who have grown up can sometimes take it for granted. He turned out to have won several awards including a Rhodes scholarship. I saw him afterwards and told him I enjoyed his speech.
Gotta run to the grocery store and get some ground beef. Thye're gonna make grilled burgers for me tomorrow for Mother's Day! Woo Hoo!

Oregon County Seeks Klingon Interpreter

Position Available: Interpreter, must be fluent in Klingon.
The language created for the "Star Trek" TV series and movies is one of about 55 needed by the office that treats mental health patients in metropolitan Multnomah County.
"We have to provide information in all the languages our clients speak," said Jerry Jelusich, a procurement specialist for the county Department of Human Services, which serves about 60,000 mental health clients.
Although created for works of fiction, Klingon was designed to have a consistent grammar, syntax and vocabulary.
And now Multnomah County research has found that many people and not just fans consider it a complete language.
"There are some cases where we've had mental health patients where this was all they would speak," said the county's purchasing administrator, Franna Hathaway.
County officials said that obligates them to respond with a Klingon-English interpreter, putting the language of starship Enterprise officer Worf and other Klingon characters on a par with common languages such as Russian and Vietnamese, and less common tongues including Dari and Tongan.
Hows the weather out there everybody?

Lone Star Chat

Our Texas Locale page recently got very busy on the unusual topic of Ouija boards and such. Archy suggested a Lone Star Thread That Will Not Die. Like those darn Hobbit threads with 30,000+ posts.
This is not my thread and I'm not going to baby sit it every day. I just gathered the kindling and y'all have to start the fire.
Well, I think there are complete language specs for elvish, and some societies that speak it, just like Klingon. Someone in Oregon might wind up at the funny farm speaking only elvish, so you'fe got to be prepared.
Of course, a nice cushy job would be as a translator of dwarvish. The dwarves were very secretive about there language, and little is known about it. One could bluff their way into that job, knowing that nobody will ever show up to test your language skills. :)
