Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Well, weather north of the 25th parallel always moves from west to east, with thunderstorms associated with cold fronts normally taking a southwest to northeast track, that's why the southeast to northwest track over there struck me as odd. I've noticed this thunderstorm pattern is consistent where I've spent time, from South Florida to Virginia, including the gulf coast of Florida. But local topography can cause weird things to occur in certain locations, and Mississippi is not too far north of the tradewinds, where weather moves in the opposite direction.

Oh, I just remembered, local, as opposed to frontal, thunderstorms have a mind of their own. Every afternoon in S. Florida, huge thunderheads build up over the Everglades, then the first thing they do is move out over the ocean, which is against the normal weather flow down here. Your storms may be local storms, Suzi?

Sorry for rattling on, you touched on weather, one of my favorite subjects.

It was SuziQ that posted about watching thunderstorms, but I agree, I love watching them too, except when I am in a boat and have to contend with the things. Best is when they come by at night, when you are in bed.

That's the way I think storms should move. The weather front itself moves roughly from the northwest to the southeast, while the individual thunderheads within it can slide along the face of the front, from southwest to northeast, even as the front is moving in a straight southeasterly direction.

No - they are still there.... If I brought them here, they would just get eaten by horses!

There are all kinds of bulbs, Irises or Gladiolas (sp?) that the prior resident planted here, but they never make it to bloom!

Yeah, I like that too. I had intended to add Suzi's name to yours on the post. But, usual WN duh here, forgot.

My two favorite parts of the night storms are 1)rain on the metal roof (which I don't have here) and 2)wind! I love the wind noise back home. Alas, that isn't here either. But, last night my pastor touched a nerve with me when he informed us that you can't "hear" wind. GRRrrr... Well, I sure like the noise that it makes whooshing across the prairie.

I need backup on this arguement with a friend back home. She keeps insisting I don't know what I'm talking about with my storms. Truthfully, we live about 45 miles apart and there is a significant geographic change in the way some of the "local storms" do come in to her area. But, most of the time, they get to her in the normal way. I just haven't been able to convince her of that. I think she just must not pay much attention to radar.

Proves me wrong. I'd been told that critters didn't like Irises. Something about bitter because of poison in them. I had a goat to help with lawn mowing for a while. That was the end of my tulips but they didn't bother the irises.

Yeah, just a look at the radar, or a weather map, ought to make the point. I was looking at it in Sydney, though, that took a little getting used to.

The first year my family was involved in the Easter production at our church, I was cast as a guard in one scene. When I saw the video I said...

"They say the camera adds 10 lbs. JUST HOW MANY CAMERAS WERE THEY USING????"

I don't know that they are Irises.... they might be Glads.... they have never been allowed to bloom!.... They just have the same tall spears.

Well, I'll just check back in after the concert. I didn't get much sleep last night (now what WAS I doing...), so I'll probably just turn in early.

I'm just hoping I'll be able to snore in time with the band...gotta run.

I had a really lousy day at work, very frustrating. It's like banging my head into walls. And I'm really tired and the sibs are being annoying. Oh well.

I have some irises coming up next to my front walk. I chose them because a dear friend at whose wedding SSQ and I sang 25 yrs. ago, used them in her attendant's bouquets. She died about 5 years ago after a 5 yr. bout with cancer, and I just wanted to have something close that reminded me of her. And they always do.

I started with about 20 bulbs and those suckers have spread! I now have a huge circle of iris plants about 3' in diameter, and when they drop seeds, I get 'volunteers'. None of those have bloomed, I'm not sure they can, but they sure are prolific! I'll need to dig them up and separate them this fall. I'll move them to other places in the yard.

These day lilies were blooming ever since I could remember in Granny's yard. A cousin now lives in the house, and his sister is the one who gave me the plants. I'm gonna get some more when I go down there in early June!

Isnt' it wonderful to have something that reminds us of home from so far away?

You may never knowww..... But, at any rate, if someday you get an opportunity to have a planting place you ought to go get some of your grandma's bulbs.

Another plant I've got growing in 2 places in lemon verbena. These aren't from my great grandma's house but she used to have this growing by her front porch and the fragrance will always make me think of her. So, I have it planted in front of my bedroom window.
