Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I think the cheapest of the gas ones are less expensive than the electrics, though.

Around here the cheapest are the cheap electrics not the cheap gas ones - BUT by no means buy the cheapest. I have done that with both kinds. Really, they just aren't worth it, go ahead and get something a little more durable. My gas one I have currently is about 8 years old. I think I paid about $180 for it. It's what pro-guys use but it's definitely been worth it because of the length of time it's lasted and work it's done. Get electric - just do as Hair says and get something worth it.

I ordered them day before yesterday and they were mailed yesterday. They will come to me, and I will re-package them along with some other goodies and then send them on.

Yes, they should get them before they leave...it only takes about 10 days for our items to get there! Pretty good! Better than when I sent to Kosovo!

Rosie, I think that might be perfect for you! You really did tell us your yard is fairly small anyway right? So it's bound to stay charged long enough to do what you have. They have to make them where they would do someone's large yard or they couldn't sell them very well. At least, I would think that.

I have the big powerful gas one too that has the optional blade attachment.... But mine is a farm tool, not a suburban edger!

The middle-size whackers are about $100 and will last a long time even with a lot of use.... and the smallest ones are $70 and last one year of use. They just burn out.

I just went to get out of my pjs and when I bent over to put my shorts on, I fell flat over! Landed on the foot of the bed, thankfully!

We had a black couple over for dinner last night, the guy is a childhood and still very close friend of my son, they met back in cub scouts. Now, they're 23.

During conversation, it turned out they are LOTR fanatics, from the conversation, they have it worse than most of us even. I once saw a post wondering if black folks liked the movies, apparently yes.

But the themes are pretty universal.

Do you know if the cordless ones are at all OK? Like this? Seems like they'd run out of steam pretty quickly, but if they DID work, it'd be the best of both worlds! Electric with no cord!

Cordless tools have come a long way. I have a cordless sawzall and there are other powerful tools that are now cordless, and they have the same power as a regular one.

I would be hesitant because weed-wacking is a more constant "on" activity usually, and I would be afraid that it wouldn't last long enough to get the job done.

The cord for the electric one, with a heavy long cord, didn't bother me that much.

Mine was a farm tool. Till I moved here. Now, it's nice even in my citified yard. You know how guys all like their tools - (dwarf thing) - my neighborhood has all these guys with huge riding lawnmowers doing medium sized city yards. They get out mowing and comparing mowers. And I HAD a regular old non-self-propelled mower (it's dead now) and this huge beast of a weed whacker. Guys would feel sorry for me about the mowing and then see the weed whacker and be all over it. "WOW, what've you got that for? Man that's a big weed eater. Gee, why didn't you get a better mower and a small weeder?"

But, you know what? I'd love to have the mower that Rosie just described that she has. That would be great for me here.

That one is in the small category - 12-inch cut path..... they do have ones that cut a wider diameter... 14-16 inches and higher.

I would go to a store and pick them all up and hold them.... See which one is really light, which one is too heavy, and which one feels heavy enough and is the right price. The cordless ones will have a heavy battery that will add considerably to the weight for the same power in a corded one. The balance of how it carries is the most important thing....

I guess I'm partly just remembering the atrocious cordless screwdriver my shop had when I was in the military. It worked really well for about ten minutes...and then became completely useless. I belive we had a drill that wasn't much better. I've been very skeptical when it comes to cordless things ever since.

On the other hand, one of my brother works in assembly and uses cordless tools, and he's tried to convince me they're much better now! I may try to find some user reviews on that model, but if it sounds like it won't do the job, I don't wanna waste my money. I'm talking about a tiny yard, so I would THINK it would be enough, but I don't want to risk it if it's likely to have less and less power time as it gets older.

I'm told that there is a second offer letter (one with relocation benefits) on the way, but I haven't seen it yet.
