The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I guzzled Pepto Bismol.

We went out to eat last night for SSQ's 50th birthday; he got a free Ice Cream Sundae and got sung to by the wait staff! Joseph drank 3 glasses of Dr. Pepper and ate his WHOLE huge hamburger. He had taken a couple of bites of the Molten Chocolate Cake we ordered to share among the other three of us and started getting green around the gills. We came on home and he did the Pepto thing, too. He was a little, uh, indisposed when we got home, but felt better later in the evening.

Hope you get to feeling better as the day wears on. Do the boys nap? Maybe you can catch a few winks later this afternoon.

The ships of the Lincoln carrier group are going to their various places around Puget Sound.... Bremerton is the Naval shipyard, where those due for maintenance or overhaul will go.

The Lincoln itself came home to Everett yesterday too.

Hair - that pit bull thread continas some of the silliest and rude people I've ever had the displeasure of meeting! I've been in there this morning already, but I have a feeling I may just tell everyone to blow it out their shorts soon!

I haven't been over there yet this morning.... I even tried to backpeddle a little bit because like anything else, the rudeness of the argument as pushed me into a harder line position than I might have otherwise taken... I don't like pit bulls as a breed. If a friend wanted one, I would warn them about them.... I don't trust them... But I wouldn't ban them or kill them all. Highly subjective and my preference, thats all.

I actually like pits, but that is only because my experience with them has only been positive. But I would never recommend them as a family pet (one with young children) since the possibility of an attack is too risky to gamble with. I wouldn't recommend Chows or Rotties for the same reason.

They've (pits) been ruined as a breed, sadly. Dobies are in there to, but luckily, they aren't that popular as "bad dogs" anymore so they have been able to make a nice comeback! Same goes with German Shepards - they were overbred and ruined in some places for a long time - but they are coming back strong now! I have no hope for Rotties or Chows any time in the near future. :(

Let's hope pits become less popular with the gangbangers and maybe the breed can be saved and redeemed.

I feel much better...drank a couple of cups of coffee and got myself going. I've been up since 5:45am. Steve left at 6:30am and seemed grumpy that I imposed on his "morning time". Ha ha!

The boys are up now, and have already been outside...the day is nice and bright.

My opinion of pits is mixed...I don't think that Pit bulls have been ruined, they are doing exactly what they are bred to do. It is what they are bred to do that does not make it a good pet.... When they are aggressive it is because of their selective breeding, not bad breeding.

I have not had good experience with them. My friend Tiffney used to tell me how calm her dog was, yet, I could not, and would not bring my dogs over when I visited. She let her toddler climb all over him, and he didn't look right to me and one day he ripped the throat out of her goat in front of her child.... OK maybe you say that goats are prey and shouldn't have been loose with a dog. She kept the dog after that, but a few weeks later it got out and killed the neighbor dog. She put him down then.

Other dogs - any prey-driven dog can do that.... I know that. But it goes into the mix.... And I have to keep coming back to the position that these dogs were created and bred to fight.... not to be pets. It is their purpose that is not particularly well suited to be promoted as having the mental makeup of a good family pet, especially when there are so many better breeds to choose from.

My opinion is far from popular, but I believe if the pit bull breed was mixed with the labrador breed (to weaken jaw strength, soften the mouth and improve the temperment), they'd be the most popular pet around.

3 of the pits I've been around were lab/pit mixes, and their eyes were the kindest you've ever seen. No hard-edged glare at all (lots of pits have that evil eye thing going).

All 3 were family pets and 2 were in their teens when they were put down. Neither had any episode of meanness in their lives. The 3rd was 11 when I left the animal hospital, and Bruno was so gentle with "his kids" (the family had a 2 and 5 year old) that the owners had to rescue Bruno from the kids sometimes! Very similar to labs in temperment and patience.

I have to go to Longview today.... too bad I don't have Frodo. Longview is the home of Mount St. Helen's.... our own local Mount Doom, and it is clear and crisp today, the volcano will be out!

I don't have to leave till around noon, but I have to get ready for the meeting this morning.

I saw that! LOL!

I'm done with the pit bull thread. MDC said "BITE ME!" after I tried to help. What a jerk!

He's lucky no Dwarves are around today.

Have a good one, Hair. See you later!

Be sure to take some biscuits and cheese with you on your journey!

She kept the dog after that, but a few weeks later it got out and killed the neighbor dog. She put him down then.

YIKES! She should have done it the first time he attacked! She was lucky that the second attack wasn't her child!

My brother had a pit, Shelby, and she was one of the sweetest dogs you would ever find. Her kids were sweet dogs, too. Another brother had one of them, and one day the dog disappeared. He returned almost a year later, and it was obvious that he'd been beaten and almost starved. They think he might have been stolen to use in dog fights, but that he just wasn't trained for fighting, so they mistreated him. He was home for several months, then went missing again and never came back.

It is such a shame what people will do to dogs.

oops. I heard about this thread last night. Wondered what was going on. I probably don't want to go there. I have loved a few pit bulls and they never attacked anybody. Had some neighbors for a while that had one that I had to be careful to keep my kids away from because it would have lived up to the rep. But, guess what, I would have too if somebody treated me the way they treated that dog. It was on a chain 24 hours a day. Not fed properly OR REGULARLY. Abused. They would fight with it and throw stuff at it etc. Try that with any animal and see how they act.

OTOH, the one we are closest to right now is about as loveable as any dog can get. Belongs to my aunt and uncle. He's a house dog. He's very fond of Myranda and I also. If any of us were attacked, we don't know. But, I think he's 9 now and never tried to hurt anyone except a man he didn't know who walked into their house without being invited one time. My aunt called him off and everything was okay. But, that guy learned something.
