The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Yeah, at the other place. My place doesn't get enough sunlight.

I thought about leasing it...It's nice and quiet here even with neighbors and I like the birdsong in the morning. My sister doesn't want me to sell. But I'm thinking the rental market is soft right now. There are two rentals near me that have been empty for almost a year ...or maybe longer than a year. So I'm thinking that the make or break decision on KC is if they'll buy my house if it doesnt' sell in 2 months.

Well, that totally makes sense. I should have had a deal like that when I moved up here. Well, that's debatable now. I would eventually like to move back home but it would help me a lot financially if that house down there would sell.

When Bush first bought the ranch property values skyrocketed. Land that nobody wanted before was then worth a fortune. Of course he was still governor then. When I moved I was counting on that popularity helping my house sell. However, having the president in the neighborhood as opposed to the governor presents a whole new set of problems. Secret service, no fly zone, people snooping about, dad-blasted tourists and reporters. And we were a pretty secluded little community sometimes bordering on being like Hair's Capital Forest people. So, now, that I decided to move, people are NOT wanting to buy property there. The house is paid for down there but I'm still paying utilities. The house was already 90 years old so of course not having occupants it has gone downhill tremendously in the last several months.

The bright side is: I have utilities, when I get an opportunity to move home the house is ready to be bulldozed so I can start over again with a nice new house on the old land that I love!

Well, I still like it. There's a lot of folks that don't. The tourist types and journalistic types are a pain. The only other difference for me is that my baby brother used to fly over my house and buzz my house when he flew in from Dallas. He can't do that no more. It was always neat for the kids to have Unkie Monkey buzz the house and circle. We would be in the yard like the Jedis waving and hollering like he could hear us.

Other than that, I suppose it's been good for the local economy. I didn't have a problem with the economy down there.

I don't however, think that I'll throw my kayak in the Middle Bosque at the low water crossing and head downstream anytime in the future. And I used to could do that.

Morning! I am going to have a long day... my sister's got some ceremony I have to go to and then we're having a party, with all sorts of food I like but can't have.

On the plus side, I think I've settled on naming my character Holly.

OT: best of luck in the session on Wednesday. Big decision time, trading woodlands for prarie wildflowers. But with cold 5 and heat 7, we get a good range of growy things.

Columbines are in full bloom and the strawberries are making wonderful progress. We're going to a nursery we haven't been to before. Need to pot up some calla lilies today. Seriously thinking of planting a couple big sunflowers.

Hair; great pics of Bay, glad to know he can still kick up his heels in the spring.

Oh, hey, it just dawned on me after I posted about Holly/plant. It's a good name for your character. The plant is well adaptable. It can be found in most climates. It can recover from amazing hardships and unlike a lot of plants if it is started in one type of soil and climate then dug up and transplanted in something different it will still come back (after some shock) and thrive. Isn't that the character that you were describing last night?

Today I'm the nosy neighbor. Are you anywhere near a place called Montreal, MO? The absolute BEST gardener I've ever known in my life lives there.

Yes, that's perfect!

I actually named her after the main character in "Menace from Earth", my favorite Heinlein short story after "The Man who Sold the Moon".

So are you getting a bit of writing done this morning? Hope so.

Myranda is at a church retreat. I'm home alone! I kind of like it. I have Smeagol in here with me. I'm trying to clean a bit but more just puttering and relaxing.

Steve just took both the boys to Albertsons...they have a free jupiter jump (one of those big blow up bouncy things, you know?) We're going to have pancakes when they get back, but I told them to take their time. Made sure the boys got a granola bar in them before they left.

Do you know where I can get a copy of the President's speech that I can actually download? I can't figure out how to download RealOne...and I hate it anyway.

I need one in Windows Media Player.
