The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I'm getting a new kitten. She's only 4 weeks old right now. I have to wait until she weighs 2 pounds before I can get her. I'm naming her Smeagol!

So you're going to have a cat named Smeagol and I have a dog named Smeagol. Do you think they could have conversations with one another? You know, like good Smeagol/bad Smeagol or something? It might made and interesting scene....

Ohh this review http://www.tolkientown.com/shop/product_reviews_info.php?cPath=21_29&products_id=398&reviews_id=313 just gave it a bad mark but not much of one. I could always give the green Hobbit to somebody if I decide to go all the way.

Heh, when you first posted what you were looking for, I thought the deluxe HC edition (the one you linked to) fit your description pretty well. My own taste in books are for ones that look old, rather than fancy, so the original-style dust jackets appeal to me more.

I can understand your discouragement with bookstores... I doubt that you could find the deluxe HC edition in one, unless it was an independent store, dealing exclusively in collectable editions.

The Narnia books are great, but they are children's books, aimed at younger folks than The Hobbit, I think.

They were???

And I thought I'd finally found another set of books that suited my stunning intellect.

Old is nice, although part of my love of leatherbound is how it ages, it gets old really nice. I hadn't realized before just how the same bookstore really are. In Tucson the only hardbound editions are the big red, the movie jackets and the Lee jackets. Now the Lee jackets of course are magnificent, but they're jackets. I'm not usually one to complain about a homogonized world but in this case it's really frustrating. Even the used places in town basically have those three.

I could ignore that it's a set for a while though. I'm really not that hot for Silmarilion (that's my proof that I'm not a total Tolkien dweeb, I've never finished Silmarilion) and I do have a good looking Hobbit (boy is that a dangerous sentence). Quests are best never completed, you just want to make headway once in a while.

Heh... There are a few dwarves who may take advantage of that sentence. I hope it is not too bad for you! ;~D

I agree about the homogeneity of chain bookstores... finding something "off the beaten path" can be very difficult.

I don't know why, but old stuff really pushes my "cool" buttons... if I had the money, collecting first editions of books I like would be my full-time hobby.

Sorry I'm just now getting back to you. We decided to watch "Charlotte Gray". It was a good movie!

The only name I recognized from that list of poets was Cummings. Was that e.e.cummings? I don't remember much about him. The kids, I'm sure, will study him when they get to the modern era in Lit. That won't be for several years, though. We get started with the Ancients in the Fall!

In honor of that, I should get Frodo back on the road tomorrow. I have been a little too self-involved to remember my course!

Lil'Freeper, send me your delivery address if you still would like him *NEXT*!

Sheesh! I get antsy enough on just 19 miles on the Bay bridge...

I remember being terrified when I was little having to cross to New Orleans over the 23 mile long Lake Pontchartrain bridge. EEK!
