The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Once upon a time in the comic book, Nightcrawler was a devout Roman Catholic. I have to admit, however, that I've refused to read any X-Men comics since about 1993, so I don't know if they've changed the character at all in the last 10 years. I hope not, because he was a rarity in comics in that he was one of the few characters to have well-defined religious beliefs.

Oh, well, thanks. That makes for an interesting idea, anyway.

Not as interesting as demon-haunted boots, but that's another story.

The only ones I have seen are the older edition hard-covers that can be found on e-bay. I haven't seen any currently in print that are display quality except the red one! Interesting that you don't like the red... I always liked that it was red, a la "Red Book of Westmark".

Heh, it worked well for the team when they fought Dracula!

Wolverine was never my favorite, by the way. I always preferred Cyclops.

The red isn't so bad I don't like the tree on the spine it's lame, and it really doesn't match the the green Hobbit, if it had runes on the side it would match. I also don't like that it's one volume it's three books it should be three books.

Take a trip to TolkienTown!

As far as I can tell they sell every edition of the books currently in print, including UK editions. Perhaps one of them will appeal to you!

I think this hardcover set, which features the original dust jacket designs, might complement your copy of The Hobbit very well.

Are you interested in the older used copies on e-bay? There are several leather editions...

This one is sure cool.... a six book set. The price on this one is also pretty high, but it also looks mint.

I am so ashamed that I did not think to plug TolkienTown.

I'll do used if it looks good. That set is absolutely gorgeous, but definitely out of the price range, I'm looking for somewhere inbetween 100 and 150.

Ah, well, that's ok... I hope they stay in business until I can save up enough money to buy from them, though! ;)

Number 9? Number 9? Number 9?

Right, I figured the price might be out of line for a simple muse, but it is an edition I am glad I know know about!

BiRB: Did you stick around for the Twilight zone, those are usually pretty good. Saw the last half, enjoyable 30 minutes so here I are, trying to catch up and waiting for HAIR to lower the boom on the dwarf and the ancient hobbit.

Noooo, we switched over to Fox for Bernie Mac. I've seen some of the new Twilight Zone, and enjoyed the episodes I saw. But, I'm not crazy about remaking classic episodes, which is what they were advertising for tonight's ep. I'd rather they stick with new stories, but Hollywood seems to have trouble doing that these days.

If I could afford to blow 400 bucks on a decoration (trade paperbacks are for reading, hansome editions are for looking at and going "oooh") they'd be on the way now.

Anybody seen this one in person
http://www.tolkientown.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=21_29&products_id=398

It's single volume which is one of my strikes against the red but I'm not an unreasonable person I can handle up to two strikes. I've seen that one on the web before but not in person so I'm hoping for word from somebody I can trust, hence why I brought it to the Hobbit Hole.

I haven't seen it... The first review could have been written by you, because they didn't like the Red book either! ;~D I am not sure how to feel about the thin bible-pages.

I just recently bought this book and I think it's absolutely gorgeous!!! It is very slim compared to any other full version of LOTR. (It is the size of a regular book and it contains all three volumes!!) The pages are thin like a Bibles and the edges are trimmed in gold. When you first try to turn them they stick together but after your first time through you'll have no problem. They are not so thin that you see the words from the opposite page on the one your reading. The binding of this book is black leather until the gold line and then it is a canvas-type material. The protective box is constructed of the same leather as the binding. There are maps on the first and last pages. I can't think of anything else to say about this book except that I have been looking for a very long time for a hardcover LOTR to purchase. This one is MORE than I expected. I had looked at the red-leather one and didn't much like it. I hesitated at spending the $$ for this book but if you are a collector and want to add a beautiful/func-tional LOTR book to your collection than this is the book for you! I wouldn't recommend taking it everywhere with you, that is what your tattered, stained, torn, etc...paperbac-k version is for. But for a nice quiet night or rainy day by the fireplace, sitting in your most comfortable chair reading...this is the book for you!!! Spend the cash! You'll be glad you did and remember, you can't take it with you when you die so enjoy it now! Happy Reading! D*

Sorry I got here too late to chime in on the First Communion question. ..... I hope that you had a good time.

Thanks LCS! I had an absolutely wonderful time. And I believe I've made a new friend in my new town because of the affair. That made it totally worthwhile.

The one you pointed out was nice and would work well but it's dust jacket. I'm trying to avoid dust jacket. This is a total snob purchase, I've always loved the leatherbound look (or the mostly leatherbound in this case) but could never afford it, shortly after the first movie came out I realized I could afford it for books that deserved it but where to start. Been looking off and on ever since but have been discouraged because every bookstore has the same editions. Tonight at Borders it dawned on me I should ask on FReep because somebody here knows everything.
