The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hi WN! I'm checking in between work and choir.

I didn't mention last night, because I was tired, but I now have the grade for my religion class... an 'A'. The professor was a wacky liberal-catholic lesbian - but we got on very well, oddly enough. I guess we figured each other out.

Thought I would share that... Only two more classes to go and I'm thinking those will be As also. Then it's time to start planning the summer...

When Jr. was born, I promised him and myself that it would be different. I know right now he's thinking he wants dad to be a coach. But when he's grown, he'll remember the hours I spent as a scout leader and the places we've gone and more.

You are so right about this Corin. Even Myranda at only 17 is seeing how valuable it is now to have a mom that does things with her and takes her places. She was whining the other day about me having to work on her birthdays. At first I felt bad, then I said, wait a minute and reminded her that one year I'd taken off work and gone to 6 flags, and another year to Schlitterbahn, and 2 or 3 years to a really awesome camping/swimming place about 80 miles from home. And last year I took her to Phoenix even though it was 2 weeks after her birthday. She laughed and said, "Yeah mom, really, you've only worked on 2 of my birthdays that I even remember. You're the one that always thinks you aren't here enough." :-) I was glad she noticed even though I stay too busy to count.

OUTSTANDING LADY!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Sounds like you and Myranda have had teachers who were sisters. Hers was a Jewish (by nationality), lesbian, atheist, socialist. I think I got it all in correct order. She should be the one telling you about her. it was scary. worse than halloween.

Fritos with chili poured over it. Preferably "Wolf Brand" chili.

At the ball park, they will take a small bag of fritos, slit it along the side and pour the chili right into the bag, hand you a plastic spoon and there you go!

What's going on here? I just got in for teaching night class and the very top post on the last page is meant JUST to make me hungry all night!!! SEND SOME SOWN THIS-A-WAY!

Well, thank you!

I like my professor though. She didn't penalize anyone for having a different opinion, and she didn't insist on having the last word. I guess I'd say she was as fair as a liberal professor could be expected to be. I've taken three classes with her and rather regret not having any more.

You know, that speaks as highly of an instructor as anyone can. It is very difficult for the best of us to not hold someone's differing opinion against them. And for someone to be in a teaching position it is so easy to penalize with grading. She must be a woman of great integrity.

Myranda's teacher penalized her for her outspokenness. It wasn't a pleasant situation for Myranda to be in. She hasn't quite developed a sense for when the right time might be to keep her mouth shut. For better grades might be a good time.

Hullo!

Did you know that 8x10 Prints won't fit in an 8x10 frame? I didn't until today!

I made up two tributes with poems and pictures to give to my vet clinic to thank them for everything they did over the years and at the end for Logan and Zulu. They have such things hanging in their lobby, and cards....

So I went to get frames for them on the way there, and the dang things didn't fit! - half an inch had to be cut off all the way 'round, and I didn't have scissors with me dang it! So I had to come home and do it. Anyway, here they are done... The text on the right-side one is all the same as is on my profile page, and at the bottom it says "Thank you Deschutes Animal Clinic, for a lifetime of care for my two departed dogs, Logan and Zulu."

The one on the left is "A Dog's Prayer" (text below)

A Dog’s Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart is more grateful for kindness than mine.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I would lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will teach me more quickly the things I need to know.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I would never reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

Even though, if you had no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow, When it is cold and wet, please take me inside. For I am a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, and your companionship my greatest joy, as you must know by the wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

And beloved master, when old age or illness deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you.

Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful treatment I deserve.. and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

Dedicated to Zulu, Gidget, Edgar and Logan

(Edgar is my friend's pup in the center picture)

Oh Hair, that is so heartwarming. It makes me want to go home and snuggle up on the couch with Smeagol, instead of working tonight.

I haven't learned when to shut up, either. But I had her for religion - and I know my position backwards and forwards - and two history classes. History is one of my many obsessions. I may not be right with dates, but themes and people, I know. Which was head and shoulders over everyone else in the class. I ended up tutoring two girls for the final... they passed and sent me a sincere thank-you note!

Ah, the power of homeschooling... I sometimes worry. What if I go to grad school and really really love my career? If I had kids, I'd have to give that up. But I'd like to have children... two or three, maybe... and I'd never give them over to the state to raise!

Maybe I will have to marry a rich husband who will stay home with the kids!

So, what if you have time in your life to do everything? I didn't get to home school because there wasn't another parent to support the kids. But, if there had been, I could have. And now, I'm all registered to start back to college next fall and I kind of want to continue now till I get a doctorate. Either that or go into missions in Afghanistan.

I'm 45. But, I'm not too old to do all of the above!

I actually suggested that to Jill. GTMA. I thought it would be nice. She could come here while Tom's in Iraq. Abby starts kindergarten this fall. I could bring her to work with my and teach her. The idea didn't fly.

My wife will sometimes play games with the telemarketers...stringing them along, etc. I usually wait for them to take a breath and say "we're not interested thanks for calling click"

Myranda says I'm rude and don't act like a good Christian to telemarketers. I skip Corin's "we're not interested thanks for calling." I get right to the click... unless there's a whistle by the phone, which I do try to keep near.
