The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Heh.... my mom tried so hard to teach us penmanship but we just wouldn't learn. I can read my writing, and I type everything anyway, so who cares? Right?

Smeagol is Myranda's dog, not mine and she's spoiled her horribly.

Daddy and Suzi (yes, that was the dog's name) used to play a little game every night. My sister, who is just younger, and I used to share a bed, and Suzi would sleep with us. She'd be up near the pillow until Daddy would come in and tell her to get to the foot of the bed. She'd burrow down under the covers near our feet. Then Daddy would pat the bed and say " That's my Susie, that's my Jo-Jo (my sister)and Suzi would start this low growling at him. Every night, the same thing, it was so cute!

She wasn't anyone's dog really; we all loved her, and she'd just enjoy being loved by whoever was with her at the time. She was a VERY aloof mother, however. When she had pups, she let them nurse, and would clean them up a bit, but was minimally involved otherwise. We ended up keeping one of her pups; Rosie's dog reminds me of our Pumpkin.

You know, I just really hope that my son-in-law never does have reason to think bad about his mother-in-law

I think the phone call you received shows that it is very unlikely he'd ever think badly of you!

Well, I also had another heartening thing happen this afternoon. First off, before anybody thinks I'm ignorrant - I don't trust teeage boys with my daughter.

But, one of her male classmates called this afternoon and asked for me. It is a boy that she has told me she thinks is very cute anyway. He told me who he was (I had met him once but forgot), began by apologizing for the late time that he was asking what he was about to ask, told me he was in ROTC and then explained what ROTC was in case I didn't know (I just let him talk). Then he told me about this annual banquet they have and apologized again and said it was kind of embarrassing but his girlfriend had broken up with him yesterday and he wanted to take someone to the banquet. He felt that Myranda was really a good friend and he would like to take her as a friend and not really a date because it was much too short of notice for a date. (Myranda had already filled me in on the high school gossip about his girlfriend)

Then, without my asking he told me he would bring Myranda home at whatever time I requested and that he would honor any other requests I had. Then, after we talked about times, he asked if he had my permission to ask Myranda. (now this whole time I'm thinking Myranda knows this is all coming and never hinted anything and I'm thinking I'm going to rib her about it good.) So I hand her the phone and she was as surprised to be asked as I was to get the call. So, the kid shows up all in his military uniform spiffy looking, behaves more respectably than most of the guys who've ever showed up (I have run some off) and was not doing it in the Eddie Haskell way either. WOW. I don't trust him. He was too good to be true. This is not good.

but, I'm back to the same old subject, if these are the military that we're trusting the country to, then it puts us as Americans as being the most blessed nation in the world in a way that I don't think most folks think of.

I don't know how people can NOT love dogs that are brought up right. Well, I don't want to get into that not bringing them up right. But, I know that in a few months it will only be me and Smeagol in the house. I am going to be very lucky and glad to have her. I haven't figured out where she's going when I have to go to Germany for baby delivery or to entmoot but that's still a ways off. I've just almost always had big dogs and this little dog is like a whole other species.

As I hit the post button about Myranda's dinner tonight I had a funny thought. I am so honored and impressed with these military guys I know AND with this new kid that's near military. I trust them totally with the country. BUT NOT WITH MY DAUGHTERS!!!!

look, i trusted one army guy with one daughter and i'm going on 4 grandkids now and i'm only 45!!!

I've made 2 pints of veggie dip, 3 quarts of bean dip, 3 quarts of Texas caviar and cut up 3 gallon ziplocks of dipping veggies this afternoon. I'm ready for you to send me that bag of peanut M's now.

LOL This reminds me of the "real" yellow ribbon song...you know it don't you? Not the "tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree one", I'm talking the old old one...called "She wore a yellow ribbon".

Better keep your shotgun handy!

She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (Modern Variant)
by Unknown

Around her hair she wore a yellow ribbon
She wore it in the springtime, in the merry month of May
And if you asked her why she wore the ribbon
She wore it for her soldier who was far, far away

Far away!
Far away!
She wore it for her soldier who was far, far away.

Around the block she pushed a baby carriage
She pushed it in the springtime, in the merry month of May
And if you asked her why she pushed the carriage
She pushed it for her soldier who was far, far away
Far away!
Far away!
She pushed it for her soldier who was far, far away.

Around her thigh she wore a yellow garter
She wore it in the springtime, in the merry month of May
And if you asked her why she wore it
She wore it for her soldier who was far, far away
Far away!
Far away!
She wore it for her soldier who was far, far away.

Behind the door her daddy kept his shotgun
He kept it in the springtime, in the merry month of May
And if you asked him why he kept the shotgun
He kept it for that soldier who was far, far away
Far away!
Far away!
He kept it for that soldier who was far, far away.

In the church the preacher kept a license
He kept it in the springtime, in the merry month of May
And if you asked him why he kept the license
He kept it for that soldier who was far, far away
Far away!
Far away!
He kept it for that soldier who was far, far away.

LOL! I have a 12 guage. Loaded. Nearby. Among other goodies.

You know, military uniform types never did a thing in the world for me. But, my daughters seem to have a whole different outlook on that.

Never thought about that. Smeagol would almost fit right in at entmoot huh? Almost like she was part of the story. (our Smeagol is a she.)

I might have to. Of course that messes up my thoughts of renting a bike for transportation. She's terrified of them.
