Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hehehe....that's why it's not Priority One. I still have wildlife habitat enhancement from Hurricane Fran (1996).

I meant, would you mind a houseguest until sometime in the middle of May? I'll, uh, I'll treat to pizzas...

I'm serious about this stuff. I think this is a hair net. And this thing might once have been clothing....

Not excusing him really, just wondering if that is now common curriculum at that age? I don't know. It was offered as an elective option and it seemed like a smart thing to do. A lot of schools, particularly those who teach in the classical method start languages much earlier. Luke's daycare, for example has a Spanish teacher in once a week. They call her "Miss Hola."
Had he passed this would have counted as a high school credit. But when we figured out it was hopeless, we worked it out that the French will not even show up on his transcript. He'll start Spanish next year. Maybe Luke can help him with his homework.
On another note...I'm going back and forth on the fence thing again. The hook on Sam's cable broke today. I have no idea how long he was actually loose. But when the Mrs. and Jr. got home around 5:00 from Jrs' doctor appointment, Sam was standing in the driveway waiting for them.
Maybe he's smarter than I give him credit for.

Just relish the success he was able to achieve! That's exactly what we're doing. He feels good about the grades he has brought up. We're working with him on the laptop and will have the voice activated software up and running when he starts 9th grade.

Sam was standing in the driveway waiting for them. What a good boy!
What is the cost of the invisible fence? I am curious.

What are all these things? They're called "ladies foundations."

Just to be totally flippant, is it such a bad thing that Jr didn't learn French? I mean, Spanish or something, I'd be upset, but French?

What is the cost of the invisible fence? We don't have a precise estimate, but the guy at the home show said our lot would probably be around $1,000.
But when I'm out in the back yard, I'm envisioning turning it into an English garden, so the idea of the rail fence (with the mesh inside) is appealing.
Either way, I've got a year to decide. We've spent too much money to do it this year.
To: JenB
Just to be totally flippant, is it such a bad thing that Jr didn't learn French? Not at all. At the "Rally for America" I bought him the button that says "Iraq First: Then France."
We tried to talk him into Spanish last year. I mean, French really is a useless language anymore and Spanish would be so much more practical. But there are some Hispanic kids in the neighborhood who left a negative impression. So, being 12 when he chose his schedule...well... he picked French.
We tried to change it over the summer and thought we had, but when he got to school he was in French and decided to stay.
