The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

The Western tradition of art (up until the 20th century, anyway) considers the ability to render an accurate nude to be basic to any artist's repertoire and, beyond that, a subject capable of expressing character, emotion, ugliness, beauty, or damn near anything else that concerns humanity. And, traditional subject matter in art has usually been what interests us the most, people. So it is really just the study of the most interesting subject matter.

And, because of the way the human brain is hardwired, this is one subject that you can't mess up without it being obvious. Unlike a tree, if you misplace part of the human figure, the mistake is obvious to even the most undiscriminating. So getting the human figure right, means you can get anything right.

The tradition of nudes in Western art goes back to classical Greece, died out in medieval times, was resurrected in the Renaissance, perfected during the Baroque era, and continued strongly right through impressionism and the 20th century, in spite of the emphasis on conceptual rather than representational work. It continues to be required as a part of any art degree at any college or university in the West. Every great master was also a master at this, to the Nth degree.

But yes, it is necessary to draw people clothed too, though usually it has been accepted that it is necessary to be able to draw them unclothed to credibly draw them clothed.

I am probably not being very coherent, aside from giving more information than you really asked for.

There are some classical drawings and paintings in this tradition that I've thought of posting here, just to share their sheer beauty, but am not sure of getting banned, although it's hard to imagine it for, say a Rubens, a Bouguereay or an Eakins.

It's very much fun also, not to mention difficult.

OT: that sounds a much better plan; we're going to try to cut the grass, appears to have dried out a bit. The all day rain was over hours ago.

Got K-19 on the recommendation of a military history buddy of mine, Blockbuster had a 3 for 9.99 rental, no thanks, one is enough.

Well, I got a new domain name today: www.the-hobbit-hole.net. Nothing there yet, it'll take a day or two to even be accessible, then I have to upload the files.

You'd think people with enough spare change to wander around the mall all day could cough up $20 and get a sitter.

I ALWAYS left the kids home when I went to the mall. But then, it was tiring for me because I DID watch them, except for that time my Mama and I walked away from my #1 son who was three at the time. I turned around, realized he was gone and started calling for him. About that time, I heard over the intercom "We have a little lost boy at Customer Service, we think his name is Paul" Ha! I gave him such a big hug when I saw him! Never happened again, I can tell you!

It is so much more like a 'day out', without the kids!

the model is an attractive blonde young lady who is in terrific shape, a karate black belt, looks great undressed, completely inspiring.

You know, of course, you have to share your results with the rest of us.

Didn't Botticelli like his nudes a little 'zoftig'?

It is actually a pretty good movie. I like Liam Neeson in ANYTHING though! Harrison Ford did ok as the Captain; just a little distracting hearing him do a Russian accent.
