The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

just like in the Beverly Hillbillies. Shotgun and all.

Then we'll be expecting you to bring some rheumatiz medicine to Entmoot...

Chocolate is always good! What are fun things that are harder to find in Germany than here?

You're gonna laugh. You're not going to believe this. They must have chocolate running out their ears in Ger. I have gotten an abundance of chocolate for every gift imaginable since they've been there. But, daughter thinks she's in chocolate heaven.

Things we have to send her aren't really gifty type things. Heinz 57 sauce. Lawry's Lemon Pepper. Huge ziplocks of peppered beef jerky. (when S-I-L is there also have to make and send teriyaki beef jerky) Can't think what else now but sometimes I've laughed at what she wants. I'm sure those of you who are/have been in the military can comprehend. I just hadn't had anyone close to me in this situation before. oh, Tabasco.

Thanks for your concern Hair. I'm not mad at you, if you were worried about that.

There are reasons I believe that some things MUST be stood up for. I am not going to go into it here, but if you want to continue then FReepmail me.

I enjoy FR, especially our little section of it. So I'm not going anywhere unless I'm forced to. And even if that happens my place is still open for Entmoot. Don't think you are getting of the hook for a Florida trip THAT easily! ;^)

I'm grateful that you consider me a FRiend.

The news about your daughter sure is bittersweet. I'll be praying for you, her, and her husband.

Sigh! You're makin' me miss it! I was in Germany for four years...and it's true, I've never had so much access to such gooood chocolate!

I think most of what I missed were things like you listed...some spices and sauces that I couldn't get there. Plus books...I never had enough books. But that's just me!

Our April showers have mostly been of the snow variety...

Yeah, we're having an April shower of the frozen variety this morning, too! I was going to put the crabgrass-preventer on the lawn this weekend, but I'll have to wait and see if this along with the 4 inches we had yesterday will still be there on Sat.

We were supposed to have our "Town Clean Up" on Saturday. It had been cancelled last weekend because it sleeted all day last Sat. Remains to be seen whether we'll be able to SEE the ground much less clean it up!

Good Morning!

For Haldir fans...

The prettiest corpse of Helm's Deep
- An Interview with Craig Parker as Haldir

...And did you like yourself in the movie?
(bursts out laughing) I don't know if there is any actor who finds themselves great on the screen. But when I saw myself there for the first time, with those ears and that wig, I thought, "O God, I look like a transvestite after a night of binge drinking"...

Thanks for the prayers Kevin. It's hard on her right now. My family isn't one to take pregnancy news well anytime (always "should have planned better", "it's not a good time") Daughter is already sad. She isn't looking forward to telling the rest of them because she knows what she'll have to hear. But, she did know the one person who's always happy to hear such news!

It sounds like you might have a better feel for this than me. I just send what's requested. For the books, she hasn't asked for any for herself (she always wants DVD's and videos though) but I've made great friends on the book websites sending kid's books for the last 3 years. Also, my S-I-L is always wanting the latest Clancy etc. So, Amazon, ebay, halfbay and others have their address in memory.

Thanks girl! You know, this could interfere with a December trip even to see Bloom.

I know, bite my tongue.

The first child my daughter bore actually took precidence over the Daytona 500 in '98 when the greatest driver of all time finally won the thing. Heck of it was, I had to drive through Daytona ON RACE DAY to get to see the grand-daughter. Believe me, she will be reminded of this one her entire life.

I'm watching FoxNews right now on my little TV at work here. The Iraqis are trying to take down the statue of Saddam in central Baghdad. What a site.

Ah...families...

When I called to tell my Mom that we were expecting Luke (which was quite a surprise to all of us), I heard my step-dad in the background say, "Good Lord! She's forty-years-old!"

I'm hearing a running commentary on the radio. What a great image when that thing falls.

Well...her situation is different in that she's a mother and not a teenage kid far from home! I'm trying to remember some of the things Mom used to send me, but most don't apply...like she used to have the younger kids make cards and pictures for me. But that's more something SHE would do for YOU!

I used to get books, videos, local papers, sometimes just a surprise treat that I probably COULD have bought there but wouldn't necessarily have bought for myself (bath stuff or candy, for example), sometimes things to decorate my room and my desk (Mom knew I wouldn't think to brighten the place up, so she helped!), clothing...can't even remember what all. I almost didn't care WHAT she sent, though...just getting a package from home made me feel less isolated.
