Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hang a flat mandolin on him and VOILA! Did you mean to say mandolin and viola? ;-)

All I can say is, they'd better not pull any of that "There's a drought, so we're putting water bans on everyone" this summer. Oh, we've already been told that the watering bans are still in effect. We have an odd/even system. Odd number houses can water on odd days, even on even days. And NOBODY can water on Mondays. They've instituted a $200.00 fine if you're caught. They've also put a ban on individual home irrigation systems. So many new homes were having them put in that the town said, "No More!" I'm kinda glad about that. Folks had them on timers, and didn't even pay attention to them. You'd drive thru town on a rainy day, and there are these stupid sprinkler systems just spraying away! What a waste! One problem is that the town's major well was contaminated a few years ago by road salt that had drained off the interstate, so they'd had to use the back up well until the newer one was back in operation.
I've never been too hot to trot about having the perfect lawn anyway. Our neighbor spends hours on his, and makes ours look low rent by comparison, but that's fine. I'll do what I can, but I'm not going to spend hundreds of dollars and hours every year on the thing!

You can get dwarf versions which would have a spread of no more than 6-10 feetEeee...that would be pretty big for that space. Though it gives me some ideas...I think I may look into some of the more tree-like shrubs, at least for near the stairs. We'll see...I have some bulbs planted there that SHOULD be pretty tall dahlias...I THINK that's what I planted! In any case they were supposed to be several feet high, if they come up!
I'll keep the rest of the stuff in mind. I think I may forget getting rid of the lawn, though...some of the the things people have said make me think it may be more trouble than it's worth. I'll just spruce things up a bit. And I'll probably post again later asking for suggestions for my rock garden, if I ever get that off the ground!

Did you mean to say mandolin and viola? ;-)Be a bit hard to play both at once, wouldn't it? I mean...I know Frodo is talented and all, but...

I've also heard he's a little flat.

Gary Oldman played the head 'bad guy' in "Air Force One", another one of my 'guilty pleasures' movies.

I've also heard he's a little flat. *Groan*

Air Force One is one of our favorites. I think it came out the same summer as Independence Day I remember thinking that our President at the time wouldn't be believable in either of those roles...
To: g'nad
Hey g'nad, I just read that the Abrams tank has a smoothbore barrel, which surprised me. How does that work even, and is such a thing usual for artillery or cannons or whatever you call them?
My only smoothbores are my shotguns.

Interesting that our current one has been a fighter pilot.

I received an email from my friend who got me in touch with the chaplain in Afghanistan. She got this article from his wife. Well, you got me crying real good in my office in the middle of the afternoon. GOD BLESS 'EM EVERYONE - EVERYWHERE THEY ARE!
I know I'm preaching to the choir here in FR but still, we sure do have the top notch citizens of the world over in those dusty areas fighting for the vision God gave a few revolutionary thinkers that we call our Founding Fathers.
Of course we have a few of 'em in the Hobbit Hole with us here too.
To: Overtaxed
Try to curb them hot flashes! :) Hey! I'm at the age where I'm allowed to have hot flashes!!!!
To: Sam Cree
Yep, and the previous one wouldn't have said the line "we will not negotiate...."
To: Wneighbor; Overtaxed
Please. Can't we call them "personal summers?"
To: SuziQ; RosieCotton
like low growing juniper, that would help slow down the run off from your roof because the juniper has a very tenacious root system that would help suck up the water. Oh that is a great idea! One of my favorite plants that I don't eat. although we smoked a lot of the bark as youngsters.
