The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

our first kid, Rebecca, was 10 lbs 12 oz...

YIKES, g'nad!! She was born half-grown! I'll be keeping the missus in my prayers.

I saw part of that Arnett interview on FOX News last night. It was a disgusting display!

With his a$$ kissing, he ought to be able to get a job with Al Jazeera pretty easily!

So sorry about your friend, g'nad. I've been wondering if you knew any of these guys. They are all in my prayers.

G'nad, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I feel that we are all going to be touched in some manner by this war...this on-going war that began on Sept. 11th.

When I was looking at the packages ready to send last night, it came into my head how stunned I am to be doing this. This is the calling of my time.

I do love the Brit's use of language also. I would have loved to have heard that speak instead of just reading it.

When I was in flight school at Moses Lake, we used to enjoy when British Airways was there training on a new plane (Lots of airlines test and train on newly purchased Boeing planes at that field - Even the new Air Force One (both of them) was there for several days when I was there)

I loved all their polite niceties and use of language over the radio. So often "our" conversations with the control tower are so abbreviated and mechanical. They don't have to be.

One time they asked to switch to a full-stop landing on the runway instead of a "touch and go" by saying something like: "Tower, if you please, may we have a full stop this time around? - We need to take care of a little problem we are having... We seem to have a bit of a fire indication in the main gear wheel well." and on after-thought "Perhaps if the fire control truck would come out just in case?"

LOL!

Great news about the clothes, Corin! Do you have any consignment shops in your area? You may be able to get some money for the suit and topcoat. Maybe even a few bucks for the pants.

Hmmm. I seem to remember that you can move any bush, just about anytime, except when it is flowering, or just before. When it is transplanted, you'll need to prune it back about 1/3rd so that it will be able to recover while getting used to its new home. There will be fewer branches needing water and food, so it will recover more quickly. With the day-lilies, I'm not sure, but they're summer flowering, so I think moving them in Spring would be fine.

With both bushes and bulbs, I wouldn't be too upset if they didn't blossom this year. It may take some time to adjust to the new place.

High geraniums-that's cute. But she's got a point; those big, snowball looking hydrangeas DO look like geranium blossoms. Up here in MA, they don't have the short bush variety hydrangeas, they have these huge almost tree-like bushes and the blossoms remind me of lilac blossoms! They are in the shape of a bunch of grapes.

OT (also to SuziQ, WNeighbor and any garden-type hobbits wishing to respond). My m-i-l wants to move several plants including day lilies, hydrangea (which, bless her heart, she still refers to as "high geranium"). When is too late in the season to move them?

Too late? Hmmm....think that anything moved after May is going to need a lot of watering to survive. April is a good time to transplant stuff.

BTW if you have any azaleas that you want to prune, prune them right after they've finished blooming.

A friend just told me she bought yellow azaleas (She plants only yellow flowers in her yard - it's a theme)

They aren't blooming now, so I took her word for it, but I have never seen a yellow azalea, only shades of pink or white. Ever seen one? Or is she gonna have to dig these things up when they bloom?

Thanks. I'll take a closer look when we get at home. Last time it was just after I had taken him for a walk, so I figgered he just bruised it and it got better.

He's only 4 1/2, that's too young for arthritis isn't it? When he was a puppy he had "puppy growing pains" (I forget the technical term) and at one point could hardly walk. We took him to an emergency vet (2:00 a.m. on a Saturday). They wanted us to spend $200 for tests. We waited until Monday and called our regular vet who said "give him half a baby aspirin for a few days..." He was fine a couple of days later.

Our vet? We'll I guess he's cute, but he's not really my type...

Yeah. I've thought of that. I know of consignment shops for women and kids. Need to look further.

High geraniums-that's cute.

She means well. She grew up in rural SW Virginia. When her Mom left the family, my m-i-l had to quit school in the 4th grade to learn to cook for the men. Sometimes her simple ways annoy Jr. That's when I take him aside and tell him about his remarkable grandparents. (of course I also let him know they can annoy me too...)

Lots of azaleas here in Richmond, but I've never seen the yellow ones.

I pruned our azaleas some last year. But the goobers that owned the house before us trimmed them to look like boxwoods. That's just wrong. So we've been letting them grow naturally.

I also don't understand pruning forsythia way back. For my tastes, the bigger and wilder the better...
