Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

ARNETT IS FIRED!!! Now if only we could haul that piece of trash in front of a tribunal and put him away for good...
To: Lil'freeper

Good Morning!
Is it my imagination or did the lamestream media step up the anti-war campaign this weekend?
To: Overtaxed
You're not imagining it. Baltimore Sun was beyond the pale this weekend with it's obsession with comparing Iraq to Vietnam.

If you could keep them in your prayers, particularly on Tuesday night when they have the service (our pastor was on study leave in Florida and that's as fast as he's able to get back), I know they would appreciate it.You got it Jen.

My kitty has been rather considerate lately....she hasn't tried to get me up before 5:00 in the last few days. Wonder what she's up to!
To: Overtaxed
Huh Indeed! - If this continues, you may want to have her checked. She must not be feeling well!
Well, I guess I may as well make coffee and commit to this "being up thing".

I've known Kevin since '95... was a neighbor for a year... he got crushed by a bulldozer... was the XO of 3/5... left a wife and two kids...
Marine Maj. Kevin G. Nave , 36, of White Lake Township, Mich. Killed March 26 in a non-hostile vehicle accident in Iraq. Assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
To: g'nad
Dammmm.... Sorry g'nad. How sad for his family. Thank you for sharing his personals with us... I hope his family finds the faith and strength they need now.
Man. I can't help but feel for the Marine driving the rig. His cross would be hard to bear. I hope his heart and mind are also in good care.

G'nad. Just got in and read this. So sorry. Hits awfully close to home as I am finding I know more and more men over there almost every day.
Incidentally, I almost wrote kids instead of men. Because I've known 'em since they were kids. But, as I've known them I am so proud now because I can visualize every last one of 'em in the combat situations and I know we're in good hands.
Condolences to this family. tears

Morning again all...okay it's Monday, I gots questions...
Hair - big dog is favoring his front paw again. He did this a couple of weeks ago, we looked and couldn't see anything. What do I look for? Do I need to take him to the vet? Do I need to find him a new home?...uh, scratch that last one...
OT (also to SuziQ, WNeighbor and any garden-type hobbits wishing to respond). My m-i-l wants to move several plants including day lilies, hydrangea (which, bless her heart, she still refers to as "high geranium"). When is too late in the season to move them? I'm concerned that if we wait until the house is sold we'll be in the middle of the summer.
Weekend update: planted two azaleas, spread grass seed, bought some mums and a rosemary bush, but didn't get them out in the snow...
"Retired" three more pairs of jeans and a suit. That was the black suit I wore to the funeral. Can't even pretend it fits anymore. Am also gonna miss my wool coat and overcoat...I gots to find more money before next winter or I'll be a very cold dwarf...
To: g'nad
I'm sorry pal. We'll pray for the family.
I don't know this family. But this Marine was from Chesterfield County (where I live).
Donald C. May Jr. always wanted to be a Marine. His mother, Brenda R. May, of Chesterfield County, was a Marine. His father, Donald C. May Sr., was awarded a Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and the Navy Cross for his service as a Marine in Vietnam.
He died when his tank went into the river.
God bless them all.

Do I need to find him a new home?...uh, scratch that last one... HA! - Very funny!... I guess the answer, unless you have a crush on your vet like I had when I used to take the animals in for every little thing, is to evaluate severity of his pain, and how long it lasts. If there is no swelling (I am guessing you didn't find swelling) and he is just gimping around, but not showing extraordinary pain when you poke and prod around on it, then he may have just pulled a muscle or strained it, or even just bruised a pad on a stone, and it will get better with or without help. Check his nails... torn tails that crack too high up are common, and painful enough for them to limp.
Would be good to feel his whole leg, see if it is really his paw or perhaps a joint. It may not change what you should to about it, but it might help to know where it hurts for sure. It can be hard to tell when they can't tell you. Test his range of motion on all joints (and push it till it is a little uncomfortable, but not too far - if the joint is injured, you will know) and compare his range and reactions to to his other foot.
How old is he? - He isn't just getting a touch of arthritis is he? pretty expected in a Labrador after middle age.

Brits got a way with words...They do, don't they? I've been amused listening to the British commanders' comments about their actions in Basra. In one instance, they described one Iraqi officer as being 'quite helpful' in giving info to the British. LOL! I can only imagine exactly how they were able to convince him to be 'helpful'. Maybe they 'interviewed' him in that room the marines found that had the metal cot with the battery hooked up to it, with it in his line of sight the whole time!
