The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Of course on rainy days I just get depressed...

Rainy days and Mondays always get me down...

Yes, please do keep our own pastor in prayer. He was not expecting this, and has to drive home today from Florida where he was on study leave/family vacation. He's very close to the Baptists and to their pastor. I have no doubt it hit him hard.

Prayers for the pastor's family and congregation, Jen. I know they are heartbroken, but what glory their pastor's eyes are beholding now!! You know that must be a comfort to them...he isn't lost...they know where he is.

Yes - and that's very comforting. I guess they've had a little time to prepare since he's been sick, but from what I understand they weren't really expecting it now. And Easter's coming on... it's hard enough for a church to look for a new pastor if he retires or moves, but I can't imagine how hard it would be if our pastor died.

Well, it is now raining, the squall line is close and I hear thunder on the radio. Highest tops are only 35,000 feet, but the line is moving at 30 knots.

The precipitation has stopped and it's supposed to get down to freezing tonight. I want my 70 degree weather back!

I thought y'all might like to see this thread and read what this British commander had to say to his men. It made me think of our own Dwarf Poet, g'nad.

Rimbaud meets Rambo on the eve of battle

A man to follow. I want to quote the speech here too...
“THE enemy should be in no doubt that we are his Nemesis and that we are bringing about his rightful destruction. There are many regional commanders who have stains on their souls and they are stoking the fires of Hell for Saddam. As they die they will know their deeds have brought them to this place. Show them no pity. But those who do not wish to go on that journey, we will not send. As for the others, I expect you to rock their world.

“We go to liberate, not to conquer. We will not fly our flags in their country. We are entering Iraq to free a people, and the only flag that will be flown in that ancient land is their own. Don’t treat them as refugees, for they are in their own country.

“I know men who have taken life needlessly in other conflicts. They live with the mark of Cain upon them. If someone surrenders to you, then remember they have that right in international law, and ensure that one day they go home to their family. The ones who wish to fight, well, we aim to please. If there are casualties of war, then remember, when they woke up and got dressed in the morning they did not plan to die this day. Allow them dignity in death. Bury them properly, and mark their graves.

“You will be shunned unless your conduct is of the highest, for your deeds will follow you down history. Iraq is steeped in history. It is the site of the Garden of Eden, of the Great Flood, and the birth of Abraham. Tread lightly there. You will have to go a long way to find a more decent, generous and upright people than the Iraqis. You will be embarrassed by their hospitality, even though they have nothing ...

“There may be people among us who will not see the end of this campaign. We will put them in their sleeping bags and send them back. There will be no time for sorrow. Let’s leave Iraq a better place for us having been there. Our business now, is north.”

~Lieutenant-Colonel Tim Collins, commander of The Royal Irish battle group, Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Oh - I have been here and outside workin'!

I bought some wet shavings at the feed store. the wood shavings for bedding are sold in these big plastic bales... if they leak and the shavings get wet, they can't sell them as bedding so they sell the really cheap.

So I had an idea... the path out to my gate always gets muddy because the grass can't survive the traffic. I try to replant grass, but there is no point, it turns back to mud. I bought the wet shavings to use as a path. I hope I don't regret it... the dogs may track in shavings now, but tracking in shavings is better than mud, methinks. The shavings weren't even all that wet (yet). The big circle out at the end is where I groom the horses, there is a highline there to tie to.

HOD: that is a heap of shavings you put down this afternoon. Sounds like a good idea to me. Are planning to use any kind of edging to keep it in place?

Did some hose repair and installed some quick release couplers on the main hoses. Since we're so dry and things are greening up, it was sprinkler time this afternoon, as it warmed up a bit. Supposed to be 60's and maybe 70 next week. Bradford pears appear to getting ready to bloom.

A well planned path would have borders! I don't know what I will actually do... Now that the path is defined, perhaps the grass will grow right up to it, and no doubt, through it ;~D.... we shall see, depends on if the wind blows them all over the place!

Well, I am here again, for a few minutes. It rained here in North Central Florida this morning, and will get down into the mid-30's tonight. Sunny and low 60's tomorrow.

I hope somebody crashed their plane into Michael Moore, during the Oscars. TTT did about as well as could have been reasonably expected, after the nominations, I guess.

The mainstream press's performance covering the war has been pitiful, don't you think?

Hi, LCS, great to hear from you, though I wish you might acquire a computer?

Yes, it is blowing here from the NW, strong, I imagine it might be chilly tomorrow AM, a little. weather.com says 51 tonight and only a high of 69 tomorrow, kind of shocking.

Yeah, the press sucks, I agree.

How are you?
