Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hah! - Faramir is harsher, mostly because his good parts were cut really short. But I think that is because PJ saw something differently, or saw a way to make the film more interesting by giving us more tension there, not maliciously so, or due to some hatred of the character or deviant political objective as was implied on that thread. I think if PJ got him wrong, he got him wrong honestly.
To: JenB

I can't believe you did that!
To: HairOfTheDog
I agree with that, at least.
And I'm going to bed. Merry Christmas, one last time!

no excuse for it!

Balrogs have wings and Jackson showed them... Not with hot sauce and blue cheese dressing...So much for our spam-free zone.

And Merry Christmas!
To: JenB
Balrogs have wings and Jackson showed them... Actually, Jackson still left them ambiguous. They had the general shape of wings, but when you see Gandalf defeat the Balrog on top of the mountain, you still only see "limbs" or "fingers" in the general shape of wings. There is no expanse of "flesh" or "membrane" visible between the digits that would constitute a true wing.
To: JameRetief
"Balrog Membranes" with Bleu Cheese dressing just doesn't sound as appetizing.

Hmmm, interesting:

Chicago Sun Times

NEW YORK--It turns out that size really does matter. Three hours of Middle Earth in "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" is nothing compared to the length of the last film in the trilogy due out next Christmas.
"It might be much longer," says Elijah Wood, who plays Frodo Baggins, indicating that the last journey, "The Return of the King," will be inching toward the 3-1/2-hour mark.
"It will be as long as it needs to be," says director Peter Jackson, who is busy editing the film right now. "The third is my favorite one in the trilogy. It's almost biblical and makes me cry. It's about incredible courage and the last part of it is just mind-boggling."
Wood adds, "The third movie has always been my favorite. I've seen moments from it and they just break my heart," he says. "You've grown to care about these characters and they lose quite a lot in the process of the third movie. Frodo, Sam, Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn will never be the same."
Other tidbits
To: JameRetief
Cool...
"AS FOR THAT RING: Wood actually has kept the main prop from the film, a thin gold band that doesn't seem so dangerous in real life. "I do have the ring and I keep it in my office. In fact, I haven't seen it for awhile. I wonder what happened to that ring!" Here we go again....."
Heh.... I like the kid. I really do.

I join the world of the DVD-capable tomorrow. Which means I'm in the market for the Special Edition of FotR (and later for the others). Good Guys has a sale I can't avoid -- 1/2 price on a high-end JVC DVD.
I'll be able to join the modern world, which is not easy for an elf.

Ahhh.... Good for you! - You mean to tell me you haven't seen the SE yet?

This last time I watched the movie, I wondered if PJ did Faramir this way to draw out his issues with his father. I got a sense that the ring's temptation for him was that he could fulfill what brother Boromir was supposed to do and bring "a great gift" to his father. Perhaps that would put him back in his good graces....
And your point about the part being cut short is a good one. What if they simply hadn't gone to Osgiliath? It would have been simply that Fro and Sam were held captive for a while, which is what happened in the book. The only reason they took Fro and Sam to Osgiliath was because they needed to defend the city. Moving the attack on Osgiliath to coincide with the Frodo/Sam/Faramir encounter put things into a tailspin.
Leaving out Faramir's pledge not to take the ring from the start probably was a film convention used to increase the dramatic tension.
I read your point on the other thread, Hair, about PJ presenting Faramir to us from Frodo's perspective. I think that's a good point. I also think that since they can't give us Frodo's and Sam's thoughts and fears, they may have felt the need to make the threat more obvious by Faramir's actions.
:: snif :: I still miss Frodo's "I don't think we shall ever get there" moment, though....

You do know that the freebies that came with FOTR SE expire on 12/31/02, don't you?Yeah, I know that. I'm going to see if I can use them Monday to pre-buy two of our tickets for Wednesday.
Right now the plan is for me and my daughter to see the earliest show (11:00am I believe) and then my wife and sons will meet us at the theatre to see the 4:00pm show. ;^) My butts gonna be real sore, might even swell up enough to be confused with Elrond's.

I don't think I'm going to make it back to the theater today but I'll certainly make it before the first. I need to work on my timberyard....we need more firewood at The House.
