Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Yes. The boxes are 12" square and 6" deep. They look small but hold an amazing amount!! These boxes easily got up to 10lbs pretty quick!

After Hurt, they needed to find another Academy-award heavyweight. Should be a nice, relaxing role for Susie- mega*itch. She won't have to work too hard. She certainly looks the part- easily Irulan's sis. Alia is right-on. Creepy, beautiful, haunted. And the future LetoIII- drool. I did picture Idaho as less scruffy, but that's ok.
Overall I love the visuals, the imagery. It is more cinematic than the first one. Music is better. Ooooh, what a great production!

We saw the commercials for Children of Dune but it seemed like they were pushing the sexual aspect of the show. So that AND Susan Sarandon made me not want to watch it.

LOL, looks like it's just you and I for this one. ;) I am glad SS is playing the villain...makes it easier to put up with her. So you think this one is better than the first? I was finding that it moved a little better than the first. Hurt always seemed to be speaking in slo-motion, lol.
I am looking forward to seeing what role the twins will play in the story from here on out.

Should I avoid the book?
Last night I read the chapter in Silmarillion about Aule and Yavanna. It was the chapter where Aule created the Dwarves and then offered them up to Iluvatar. Iluvatar chose to allow Aule's children to live and have life of their own, but only after the Elves had awoken (I guess you can say the Dwarves are treated like red-headed stepchildren).
Anyway, afterwards Yavanna gets all upset because she knows that the Dwarves will cut down her precious trees to use as fuel for their forges and such.
Now I think that even though Aule committed a grave sin in trying to create something that was only Iluvatar's to create, he repented and was made right. Yavanna on the other hand gets all uptight because some of HER things may be damaged at some point in the future. She even gets to the point of resenting the coming Elves and Men because they will be cutting down trees.
For some reason the attitude Yavanna exhibits seems to me to be much worse than what Aule did.
Heh, I like the exchange at the end of the chapter where Yavanna and Aule are talking and Yavanna is whining about the Dwarves cutting down trees in the future. The chapter ends with Aule responding, "They're going to need fuel." ;^)

We have a friend who's just received a deployment notice. He's an attorney, and will be deployed to DC, though he said there's not guarantee that's where he'll be all the time. I'll have to ask him if he's going to the five-sided insane asylum, if he can tell us, that is.

Should I avoid the book?Well...start reading it and see if you like it. I didn't like any of the characters so I didn't care what happened to anyone and wished they'd just blow up the whole planet by the end.

it seemed like they were pushing the sexual aspect of the show I've noticed that, too and think it's the whole target audience thing- young males. In the story there is a tremendous amount of intrigue between the sexes and the director is doing a good job of building that, however there have been occasions where it was too much. The first miniseries got a little carried away with the water of life 'celebration', and last night, there was a completely unecessary sex scene just before Korba's arrest. Fortunately, and this was perhaps a blunder, both characters were clothed. ;)
The production "Children of Dune" is actually a combination of Dune Messiah and Children of Dune and as such I found the pacing of last night's installment quite good. They covered a lot of story in three hours- and I do sympathize with the books being a slow read.
It is just an exciting thing that sci-fi channel is providing a venue to do the story justice- 9 hours would never fly in a theater. Lynch certainly failed with his attempt. It's great to see one of the "greats" of sci-fi brought to the screen so well.
Now, if we could just get them to tackle Foundation or any of the Pern stories...

So you think this one is better than the first? Don't know yet, but I am impressed so far. The first one was so groundbreaking (har har har- a little worm pun) and this one will be judged by it. But COD has a different director- with more cinematic than stage sensibilities. Same screenwriters and costumers, tho. So I guess, as the story gets handed down to the next generation of characters, the way the story is shown is also changing. Changing of the guard- poetic perhaps.

Kevin, I read the first three "Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune" in college and enjoyed them very much. The first three are excellent!... Classics if you like fantasy/sci fi.

I read Dune a long time ago, but never got around to reading the others. Maybe when I get some time I will look for those at the library.

Good morning...or afternoon here, I guess. Sorry I'm late! I had that concert thingie today. It went well. So did our gig this weekend, playing for the dinner at church. Mostly well, anyway. Few dead spaces because two brothers wanted to do some songs on their own and didn't tell us when they left the stage to practice in another room. We would have gotten up and played if we had known, but we thought they were coming out any minute. Then I had the gall to criticize that later in the day and it ended up in a shouting match...what else is new?

Well, you know how fractious bands are... Always arguing and breaking up and then getting back together for reunion tours. Yeah, I know...and bring family into it and it gets REALLY interesting! Part of the problem is just that I'm the big sister, and therefore automatically the enemy at times. If I try to correct anything, it's because I'm mean and bossy...not because I want things to be better. In their eyes, that is.
But at least today went well, and it was mostly one brother who takes offense at EVERYTHING, but it kind of took some of the joy out of the afternoon. My fault too, I guess.
We're performing again next weekend - hopefully we can avoid arguing on stage!
