The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Maybe I should try getting involved in threads that actually mean something.

Don't want to! - Shouldn't have to on a Friday!

Sorry, Hair, but I doubt PETA has even given a dime of their money to Make-A-Wish. I would never attach strings to charities I donate to, but I would appreciate it if they stood up to others who do attach strings. Or even worse, try to appease someone who isn't going to contribute anything, but is trying to flex their muscles to make the charity dance to their tune.

Make-A-Wish was ready to provide the hunting trip until the publicity broke. They could have issued a statement that this was a proper, legal activity, and they didn't want to be judgemental (a good liberal word) about it. Instead, they have changed their policy, and hunting will henceforward be treated as the equivalent of an illegal activity, and ineligible for a wish.

Maybe they made some cold financial calculations, and figured this would maximize their continuing contributions. But judging by the French-like rapidity of collapse, their powers-that-be just decided that a billion dollars of bad publicity from a leftist group wasn't worth the hassle of upholding their beliefs.

I'd like to think that charities I contribute to have proper ethics. But the small amount I can donate or withhold won't affect things one way or the other. My words on the subject might have a larger effect. It's not like the klintons going after conservative foundations with IRS audits and grand jury inquiries intending to lift their tax licenses.

When I see a group that obviously does so much good then do something bad (cave in to idiot pressures), I have to speak up so they might return to the proper path. And do it without regard to my own meager contributions. YMMV.

"Republicans don't go into that kind of work, and disrespect people that do"

Hey Hair, I absolutely disagree with the above statement, Republicans have been prominent donors to charities for years, and still are, and do lots of volunteer work. They do it for charitable motives, without the political motives that accompany alot of leftist charity.

Maybe Ted Turner and the Hollywood crowd get more publicity for it since Ted owns the media and the stars are news no matter what they do.

BTW, a substantial portion of everyone's income is taken by the government every year, which spends it on "charity." That leaves us alot less to give to good causes than we otherwise might. I would much prefer to make my own choices regarding charity. Instead, the federal government arbitrarily confiscates a substantial amount of my yearly income, and directs, whether I like it or not, how much is going to what cause, when and where. In other words, politicians are taking my money to buy votes. Thomas Jefferson weighed in against this 200 years ago, saying forced charity would destroy the charitable impulse that rests within.

Anyway, I think your social work was cool :-)

I would love to be wrong, it is just a hunch I had... that the left does get more mileage in pushing their agenda because their position is better in those organizations...

I am content. Off my bandwagon.
