The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

RE: the regular Legos.

If the 3 year old lives with the 7 year old, be sure to find out if the 3 year old is over the "put everything in my mouth" stage. Those little Legos are choking hazards.

My mind works in mommy-mode constantly.

I still have little ones myself. :)

Sadly, or maybe God intervening in my budget, the daughter's boyfriend showed up as I was getting ready. They obviously don't get left alone here so I'm letting them visit.

Hey! I think I'll make him hook up her DVD player so I don't have to. Capital idea!

Mine have been pretty good about not putting stuff in their mouths. At least after my son finished teeting on rocks. Weirdest thing.

Teething on rocks sounds about right. :)

You're lucky to have had such little problem. My oldest daughter (now 5) taste tested anything remotely colorful until she was 3 and a half. And my 5 month old cut her first tooth today!

Just saw it, the little peaks have broken through at last (bottom left incisor)!!

I managed to retain my composure out of a sheer desire to not be teased by my hubby for "crying at a movie". But I was truly hard pressed to keep it together in those two parts you mentioned.

SSQ just smiles and holds my hand. My weepiness is well known. I used to read the 'Redwall' books to the kids at night, and invariably one of the good characters dies. I would always start getting weepy and my son could hear the change in my voice and would say "Mom's getting fahklempt!"

Sometimes a song can come on the radio, and it will remind me of something sad or happy or I'll just get fahklempt for no reason! I do it all the time. Christmas, 1968 I was in the 10th grade and in the girl's choir at our high school. We went to the Gulf Coast to sing a concert for the airmen at Keesler AFB. I remember singing "I'll be Home for Christmas" and looking out over the crowd wondering if some of them would never make it home. That song will always be connected with that night in my mind, so I get fahklempt when I hear it! SSQ says I'm just tender-hearted, I guess that's what it is, though I'm a pretty tough cookie in most respects!

I assume Frodo will be captured, because they have an actor playing The Mouth of Sauron (that scrawny, weird looking Australian, who played the autogyro pilot in Mad Max). Not much point having him, if he does not have the mithril coat to taunt them with.

A lot happened, but most of it was psychological; they established what was happening to Frodo, what the ring was doing to him, and what was happening between Sam and Frodo and Gollum. There's a lot of dialogue and "happenings" between Frodo and Sam, that actually took place much later in the books. So I think PJ was getting that stuff down, so he would not have to do so in ROTK.

Faramir, the way PJ has done this, allowed PJ to add a lot of the things that happen to Sam and Frodo, which in fact happen later in the book, but which for whatever reasons he decided not to put into ROTK. My only quibble is that he did not seem to establish well enough why Faramir changes his mind. I can accept changes from the book, but they have to make sense. Perhaps something was cut out to get the movie down to three hours, which explains PJ's version of Faramir better. Faramir will also be important in ROTR, when we see Denethor and what happens to him.

Other quibbles: wargs are most definitely giant wolves, not hyenas. And the oliphaunts were too freakin' huge. Someone got a little too carried away with that one.

This would describe me most of the time but....hearing this story.....

. We went to the Gulf Coast to sing a concert for the airmen at Keesler AFB. I remember singing "I'll be Home for Christmas" and looking out over the crowd wondering if some of them would never make it home.

I reckon this is fahklempt. Tears are in my way.
