Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

There was a lot missing in terms of the book to the movie: Shelob's Lair, The Voice of Saruman, The Palantir, etc. I imagine some if it will be moved to the RoTK, but it will have to be shortened in order to fit everything that happens in that section of the trilogy

Maybe not, Ruthy! If you look at the actual STORY in RoTK, it is not the full book. At least 1/3rd of the book is Appendices, so I think PJ will have plenty of time to cover all those things you mentioned!

Mine is even smaller than that Jen. There are only four of us, two with spouses. I had an issue last year when they planned a night time event. I told them then that evening parties 2 hours from home were not good for me. If we were going to have a holiday social, it should be over lunch. This was going to be "dinner" at a place where the food is wrapped or bedded on some kind of seaweed and the waitresses have very severe haircuts. Then we would go for dessert/drinks/games at my boss's house. It was going to be a late night. I hate Seattle on a good day, and they know that, and this is not a good day. I am having panic attacks now about Christmas. The next 24 hours may end up being my traditional nervous breakdown.

Sounds like it. But we don't even have cable so that's not on my list of things I can have yet. She has a cell phone!!! He just keeps calling on the real phone and cutting of my net connection!!!!

could be because i fussed at them last week for using the cell phone when they could have been using the house phone. guilt is on me.

and I teared up when, at Sting's point, Sam said "I'm your Sam."

I didn't just tear up, I was weeping, as I was when Sam made his speech about being written into the stories about the Ring and the Fellowship.

Especially since Scouring is being cut. There's a good bit of Gondor and Rohirrim stuff, but not much Frodo at all. There's really only about three chapters.

We still have: dealing with Saruman, Palantir, siege of Gondor, Shelob, death of Denethor, journey through Mordor, Black Gate opens, destruction of the Ring, romance of Faramir and Eowyn, crowning and wedding.... but that's not as much as we think.

Somebody jump in here and help me. If I'm going to WalMart... I have only 2 people I haven't bought gifts for. I have 2 nephews ages 3 and 7. I have only daughters and granddaughters. No idea what to get these 2 boys.

Let's see. Little boys... toy cars, guns, large-block Lego, art supplies, VeggieTale videos, plastic toy tool sets...

SuziQ - I managed to retain my composure out of a sheer desire to not be teased by my hubby for "crying at a movie". But I was truly hard pressed to keep it together in those two parts you mentioned.

Both you and JenB have renewed my hopes and heightened my anticipation for RoTK!!

You know though.... if Shelob and Frodo's capture by the Orcs is going to happen, that means two crises AND a climax for Frodo. I assume he will have to get that done before the coronation happens... we will want him there... (and of course we have to have the war) and they will go home somehow after, and then get on the boat. I think they have to get on the boat.

Maybe they will not have Frodo captured, although I do hope they keep the bit where Frodo's mithril vest is taken. The most heartbreaking moment in the book for me is when Gandalf is shown the Mithril vest at the Black Gate. How demoralizing. I can't imagine, even if they rationally determine that it is a trick, there will be a minute where they must think all is lost. I don't know Jen.... I think there is an awful lot to cover! - I don't think Frodo got far enough in TTT!

I know what you mean. I'm not defending things. This was a great movie but.... really, not that much happened.

Could we have skipped Faramir? I can't believe I am advocating skipping things... but Faramir did not move Frodo along in the story.

jen has great suggestions. I would get the 7yo the regular legos though. They have great little kits.

My nephew is 7 and he loves money! He also likes football (shirts, jerseys, etc.), Spiderman, and Yu-Gi-Yoh (sp?) cards.

When he was 3, he was into Tonka-type trucks and plastic tool sets, as JenB suggested. At 3, he should still be into the Barney, VeggieTales and Blue's Clues video stage.

I'm kind of leaning toward the Legos myself. That used to be one of my favorite toys!!

Confession- still is. Use them occasionally in designing. Have some in my office.

My son, 13, loves legos still. But currently, he is building a play pen for our guinea pigs out of popsicle sticks. Lots of sticks and glue, LOL.

so, do we think some legos maybe for the 7 year old, a veggie tale movie for the 3 year old and maybe a dvd set for the 45 year old?
