The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

What a cute idea! I'll have to tell Steve about it (although 24" would be more than enough!)

If I can ever find it, I'll take a picture of it and send it to you. We used it as an activity for the boys' Woodworking pin for Webelos. Steve could do that with Matthew's Den! The boys also made tool carriers. SSQ still uses the one our son made.

The Farmer's Almanac says for us we'll have a blizzard sometime between the 12th and 14th.

It said the same thing for us for the 8th and 9th. We ended up having 10" on the 7th. I guess that's close enough. Maybe somewhere in New England there was a blizzard this weekend.

I'm applying to edit a website. I've got to turn in a mock-up by midnight. I'm getting there...

What a mess.... I really feel for ya. I hope you get some real help, even if you have to hire it. That isn't a one-man job, getting that cut up and split...

The last time I had a big tree removed, I paid the guys who got it off the house to cut it up firewood size. My brother took most of it in his truck and he and a friend split it.

That tree and the pine are the bigges pieces I have on the ground. Most of the mess (on the ground) are the tops of maples that would make great kindling (small sticks and branches) and firewood. The biggest maple pieces are about 8 inches in diameter. I know I can cut a lot of it with a hand saw but it will take some time.

Consider renting, borrowing, or buying a reciprocating saw like the one I posted up above. It will cut all the stuff you are cutting by hand, with a lot less work and time. If you were closer, I would show up with mine and help you out!

Nope. I think we need robots to do that kind of job.

With my luck I'd end up with some robot like the Jetson's vacuum cleaner.

Or one that wasn't programmed right and chops down your house instead of the trees...

Here's what you need for measuring snow...

This "snow thermometer" is just outside of Calumet, MI. It goes up to 390.4 inches, which is the record snowfall for the area, winter of 1978-79. Current snowfall so far this winter is 174.8 inches, with 31 inches currently on the ground.

Calumet is just a few miles north of Houghton, MI, where I went to college, about 100 miles north of my hometown.

Maybe that should be the Fourth Law of Robots: all robots must carry liability insurance.
