Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Actually, I'm not that bad. I use an electric weed whacker, a gas-powered lawnmower, and a Mantis tiller and haven't done myself serious harm yet!

That is one problem w/ living in Miami, I miss the snow. And the fall.
Although, I notice that the live oaks in my yard are now dropping their leaves, which is a mess. Spring comes in a couple weeks, though.

Yeah - 14" is a real tree.... a pro would be better, and keep our OT from cutting her foot off.

Black knight action figure with real removable limbs...
Order now $39.95....

LOL This is the same ice storm! I think I'd end up pulling the bumber off the car. It's a whole tree that fell over with it's roots up in the air.

The weather lady (Miss Chin, I think I've mentioned her) said we'd get a dusting, the roads wouldn't even accumulate. HA! LOL! Sounds like that only 1-2" our weather guy was sure we'd get on Friday. By 3pm, we had almost 10 inches!!

Style is American Four Square. We love it, well worth the work. One of my faves! I love the Craftsman style too, and just found a great plan for one that only needs a little tweaking for it to be just right!! Here it is
I love fooling with house plans. This is the closest one I've found that is mostly what I want.

Cool pics, 2! When are you going to build a snowman?
To: 2Jedismom
I just took a whole bunch of pictures. Including one that has a ruler stuck in the snow. 5"! There you go; proof positive!!
A couple of years ago, I helped our son and his Cub Scout den make Snowman measuring sticks. SSQ helped the boys use a jig saw to cut the snowman shape (out of thin plywood) part of the way, then they used hacksaws for the rest. They then painted the snowman and nailed it onto a tall stick. We had the measurement all the way up to 36"! We put it out last year and had almost NO snow, but I went looking for it this year and couldn't find it. It would have been great this year because I think we have over 2" of snow sitting in the front yard right now. There has been more snow on the ground for the longest time I can remember during our 15 years here! Wwe haven't seen the grass in the yard since Christmas Day!

Rain delay in Daytona. Perhaps I should spend some quality time with the trees.
To: Overtaxed
OT: guess I misunderstood the magnitude of your opportunity, a whole 14" tree roots and all, need either a professional or the three good ol' boys in a 4X4 PU.
Seriously, I'd advise leaving that alone, like Sam said, lots of stresses in a tree like that, it often takes wedges to keep the saw from binding, the branches and trunk will roll and buck as they attempt to achieve equilibrium again. Can make for interesting times. I'ved used felling wedges on occasion (they are plastic nowdays) to keep the saw from binding. Save the steel ones for splitting the rounds. Trees that big are heavy, even as rounds.
I believe you mentioned wildlife habitat earlier, wildlife habitat can be a good thing.

SQ: cool looking house. Good luck.

What a cute idea! I'll have to tell Steve about it (although 24" would be more than enough!)
It's nap time for the two blondes in the family!

No snowman. The snow is so wet and the minute it quit snowing, it started melting. It's really not that cold...35? The snow has stopped and is now almost completly melted off the streets.
Still, it was really beautiful.

Good afternoon! Glad you aren't snowed in by your blizzard. You can always move to PA if you can't get enough snow... :)

I've never seen too much yet! I hope I will someday, but where I grew up (near Galveston)...there was never any snow. We did have an inch of sleet accumulate once when I was a kid and they cancelled school!

Afternoon. I'm back here avoiding work (midnight deadline). Home from church and a meeting. Little one is napping, Jr. has an attitude and the Mrs. was asked to play for a funeral at church this afternoon.
S'posed to snow here tonite. I haven't heard how much. The Farmer's Almanac says for us we'll have a blizzard sometime between the 12th and 14th.

What are you doing for work, Corin? Or not doing as the case may be.

Yeah....maybe I'll just do the helpless female routine and see if I can get some guy to take care of those trees for me. :)
I've got a respectable brush pile in front of the house now but it's still not even half of the stuff laying around here. My Fran debris became wildlife habitat. The only problem with that approach is that it's fuel for fire.
It's still raining in Daytona. Think I'll take a Freep break and then go out and turn the compost pile.
