The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Miami gets over 50" a year, which is a lot, most of it between May and October, June and September being the 2 rainiest months. It is normal to get an inch or more at a time.

We live on a rock ridge, with the bedrock only a few inches down, so drainage is no problem. Other parts of Miami, though are very low and can collect water.

Yeah, digging post holes here is ridiculous. We got a little rosebush as a gift once, it took me 45 minutes, using an iron spud bar, to break enough rock up to make a hole big enough to put the thing in the ground. At least the rock is limestone though, which is less hard than most.

During the hurricane the older trees here could not be uprooted, since their roots had, over time gotten down in the rock. However, some of them, even big old ones, were simply snapped off at their bases, leaving the roots behind.

I thought it was the Spurs, San Antonio, in 98 or 99? the year they won the big one.

Yeah, here it is - "Twin Towers" Tim Duncan and David Robinson led the San Antonio Spurs to their first NBA championship, obliterating any glimmer of hope for the New York Knicks with their size, strength and skill.

Weird.

Well, ease of setting posts would be another priority in farm-site selection for me.

But maybe I shouldn't build a farm anyway. I just had a very serious laundry accident (smashed my finger in a drawer) I should sit down and rest.

We're going to have rain all week. At least it's not snow!

Hi all, back from church and errands. Still sad. How are you?

I take it that Washington is not a "Right to Work" state.

http://www.nrtw.org/rtws.htm

"A Right to Work law secures the right of employees to decide for themselves whether or not to join or financially support a union."

An employee in a Right to Work state cannot be denied employment because he refuses to join a union and is not required to pay dues to support a union. Conversely, I believe an employer can fire an employee without all this lawyering.

Unions. Bleck. I'm so glad computer geeks don't form unions. If we did I'm sure they wouldn't be called unions, either, but something geeky...

I see! well, I don't think that folk in management levels at the state are in the union anyway. My dad wasn't. But I will let Scott answer that one!

I don't want to mis-state what I think is going on there, because I don't know the whole story.!

I was thinking of a word-picture last night on my drive to the beach, thinking of a flame I was gonna use against a lawyer on another thread.

I didn't get it all worked out, but it was something like this:

Lawyers are carrion-birds... Having not made the personal investment of the antelope, nor having the courage of the lion, they sit back while the real work is done, and when it is over, they pick at and fight over the carcass until there is nothing of value left.

Bureaucrats (ugh)

I've been out in the woods getting the dogs some exercise. Since I'm still kinda tense, I think a trip to the gym is next.
