The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Yeah - I think they will do their damndest to figure out what happened here.... But even if we never figured it out... people will always be willing to take the risk and go. Just to go.

It's the only thing that went through my mind when I heard, the only words that said what I felt like saying....

I'm sure whatever he says it will be appropriate. Look for a call for prayer, a vow to find out what happened, and a promise to continue the space program.

Naw.... they are just exploring around. They aren't officials.
To: ksen
That's what I'm hoping for. Don't let this be an end. The astronauts wouldn't want that.

It is just a sad day. Godspeed to them and their families.
:-(

I would go, to see this sight:

Even if I knew that I wouldn't make it back to Earth, I might still go, just to see that sight, and feel weightlessness.
CBS was showing lots of video and pictures of small pieces of debris... small square part on someone's roof, another 2'-3' piece in what looked like a highway median.
To: HairOfTheDog
President's talking about the astronauts... right on, they were courageous and they knew what they were doing.
He looks so genuine.

Bear, I would go too. I would give anything to see the Earth from space...

the only words that said what I felt like sayingMe too.
They've released a transcript of the last transmission, already, from just before 9:00 am. Apparently whatever happened, was completely unexpected, contact was lost while one of astronauts was speaking; he was cut off in mid-sentence.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
That's a small mercy. It's not like the Apollo 1 fire, that must have been so horrifying...
I am glad the President said firmly we would not be giving up. Space is more than the final frontier. Space represents our future, and we can't just throw it away.

I bet we still have some very happy enemies today.Dan Rather just read quotes from Reuters concerning "popular reaction" in Iraq, quotes about how this was a punishment from God, how we deserved it, etc. Dan was quite disgusted, and it showed.
Well, they're about to learn something.
To: JenB
It is a mercy, but it may make identifying the cause more difficult.
Have you ever seen the HBO series From the Earth to the Moon? The second episode (I think) concerns the Apollo 1 fire; it includes a recreation of the event, showing the reaction of the technicians as they realized something was wrong.
Even the recreation was horrifying.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
I read a book one time about Apollo 13 and they had a long section on Apollo 1. It's heartbreaking, just like this is.

I read on another thread that Dan Rather had some guy on live (from Texas?) and the guy called Dan an idiot, right on TV.
Good job!
To: HairOfTheDog
Hi Hair.
I am pretty sure they will figure this out. They will list the possible reasons, then pick the most likely, then look at all the evidence, including from eye witnesses and narrow it down. They will see things that wouldn't occur to most of us. They have some super bright folks around that understand alot about what makes these things go.
Saw Ruthy and Glen a few minutes ago, they look fine, got cookies, you guys are gems! :-)
To: Sam Cree; JenB
Glad you got them!
I bet your original cookies were on that postal truck standoff. ;~D
That reminds me.... Jen - FRMail me with which thing you need me to send again... I think I know which thing was messed up but I want to be sure.
