Coyote Point, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Some nice differential erosion artifacts in the foreground.

TOPICS: Arts/Photography; Science
KEYWORDS: desert; erosion; escalante; grandstaircase
This GeoPic of the Week was inspired by the Travel section of the Washington Post. Go to the Post Home page (ignore the news, of course), and find "Photo Gallery: Utah's Heart of Rock" for a gallery of Grand Staircase-Escalante pictures.

Forgot to mention: Hawaii Volcano Observatory has more of the ongoing sea entry series from the ongoing Kilauea eruption on the Eruption Update page.

My favorite state and area. The red rocks are the most interesting, but the staircase is the most beautiful. Coral Pink Sand Dunes is too cool.

I have travelled through the area a couple of times. The picture doesn't do it justice! It needs to be seen by your own eyes. Great post, as usual.

The problem with this pic is that the land is a part of Clinton's land grab that sealed away a lot of high-grade American coal, giving a real windfall to the Riadys of Indonesia.

OK, but I was more interested in the erosional artifacts...
