Pop up ads

Has anyone else been getting pop-up ads while surfing freeRepublic? I have gotten several without leaving this site. The latest is the Official 2002 Smokers survey which asks me to enter my name address and other information to win a flat screen TV. This one poped up after I clicked on the "Messages" link.

I want my NT 4.0 back.

Then you'll want Windows 2000 Pro. It's really NT 5.0. Very stable, and Bill Gates will not be peering out of your computer everytime you activate it!

That's about what I'm looking at. 2000 Pro would be quite useful, especially if I decide to network. This machine I'm using now can stay Win-98SE as it has served me well in that configuration.

Just installed mailwasher, simple, easy to use and it will be a real time-saver for those poor souls on dial-up connection.

You don't have to download spam, you can delete it at the server, or better yet, bounce it back at the spammer. Bouncing it back will make the spammer think your address is bad.

Do have your internet provider's tech-support number handy when you install. It asks for some technical info: SMTP address, Pop3 server address and so on.

Resting is not permitted. That said, I was out before midnight eastern myself. Woke up this morning to a nice, gentle rain. A badly needed rain, I might add.

Thanks for the link. I would buy that in a heart beat but there is only one little problem. It is for Windows only and I have a Mac.

I don't know anybody who uses 2000, so I can't really rate it for you. I just know that XP has been praised across the board for its unique ways of preventing computer crashes.

It sounds like the last three problems you mentioned won't be problems for you at all. As for having to register all the time, I don't see why XP would be any different than 2000. Then again, I am not an expert on 2000. I would presume, however, that 2000 would want you to register the product each time you clear the drive.

I would presume, however, that 2000 would want you to register the product each time you clear the drive.

I'm pretty sure that MicroSoft brought out the new registration feature with XP. This isn't the ordinary "new product" registration that you can skip with most products; with XP, the product becomes inoperable after a short period of time if you don't register on line with MicroSoft. And, during the registration process, MS matches your product serial number with the serial numbers of some of your hardware. So, if you change, for example, your CPU, the new CPU serial number will not match and you will be on the phone with MS explaining what you did so that you can use your computer again. Rather intrusive if you ask me.

You're right about the other issues I have with XP at work; they are simply issues brought about by the methods that our IT department has decided to use. I'd really like to slap one of those folks around for having such a cocky attitude the day he installed XP in our machines. He rendered the computer nearly useless.

My mother downloaded the HotBar onto her computer. That is pure HELL to get rid of. It was suggested then to go to pchell.com for the uninstall program for this.

That is a wonderful site for all types of problems!! I also downloaded ad-aware for her and there was over 140 spyware found on her computer!!

Just felt like this was a good place to share that info.
