Sorry, google is down I was going to look for a number for your local animal control.

No trash can. What is within your reach you could use, a drawer, heavy book, rope, handgun?

Hope this will help. We just put them outside and turn them lose.

Does the alleged snake have any marketable skills?

Does having an ACLU membership count?

If you have a cat, the cat may have brought the snake in the house. My cats do.

This is very true if the cat brought it in its a gift for you if shes /hes still kicking just let the cat have it

"cats are watching it with wide eyes..."

Lift your foot and let the cats handle it......they're much more skilled than you are.

slithering in an 'S' shape on the floor and if it matters, i live in the southwest.

Well, you're in New Mexico...could be a sidewinder, especially since you say the head is NOT "pointy"....and since sidewinders are rattlesnakes, you've got a spot of bother.

Always wondered over threads like this, by the way - during these times of extreme stress, why do some people jump on the computer?....and then NOT go to Google to try and ID the problem?

I was a herpetology freak when I was a kid. I'd love to see a picture and let you know. While there are several good generic ways posted here to determine whether it is venemous or not, I was taught that you look at the belly scales after the ventral opening (its butt), and if they are divided in two, they are non-venemous. All along the belly, the scales go all the way across, until you get near the end... then they split for non-venemous varieties. Of course, this involves handling the critter, which is probably not among your top choices, LOL.

I know NM has milksnakes, but they are banded and not a flat brown/grey color. Young copperheads are grey/tan, but generally have yellowish heads (and are VERY poisonous), and have light banded markings even in youth. Garter snakes are about a foot long like yours, have flat colors (and sometimes stripes), are thin and extremely common (and mostly non-aggressive). That'll be my guess until we get more details.
