High tech glasses to prevent jetlag

SYDNEY: Here is a new discovery that could make you go goggle-eyed with wonder that the simplest of solutions could cure such a huge problem.

High tech glasses have been developed by researchers, which could hold the key to avoiding jetlag after long-haul flights. Scientists say these glowing glasses prevent the mental and physical fatigue associated with flying across different time zones.

A couple of hours before the flight, if these glasses are worn, they could help the human body clock adjust to travel more easily. The report in the Daily Mail newspaper said that the spectacles use lights to help stimulate the brain and wind the body clock backwards or forwards.

Powered by a battery carried in a pocket, the frames of ordinary sunglasses are fitted with diodes that emit blue and green light. Light plays a key role in helping the human body clock to run smoothly and to decide whether the body should be asleep or awake. Light triggers the production of hormones in the body that manages the body clock.

"Bright light is the tool which re-times our body clocks," said Dr Leon Lack, Flinders University, Adelaide. He said they should be worn for three hours a day for at least two days before travel and for three hours during the flight.

The invention has already sparked interest among athletes in Australia, who have to travel long distances for international competitions, not least the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

"The glasses would make a big difference because it would minimise the disruption and athletes could maintain their continuity of training from day one, which could have important physical and mental impacts on performance," said David Pyne of the Australian Institute of Sport.

And the deluxe model can move you forward in time - a jump of one week at the push of a button, so that you don't have to actually experience the journey at all. Initially the glasses were to have a "back in time" button as well, but that was ruled out due to various nasty side effects.

My way is to change my watch to the time zone I'm going to go to ahead of time and act like I'm already in that place. No need for fancy shmancy hi tech anti-jetlag sunglasses.

A real easy and effective solution is over the counter Melatonin. Gets rid of jet lag and has no side effects. Use it just before leaving and coming back. I doubted it until I tried it. Now practically everyone where I work uses when going to Japan and the Gulf.

Let me guess; they're called "Opti-Grabs" and they're marketed by a man named Navin R. Johnson, who bears a striking resemblance to Steve Martin....

For you, perhaps (lucky you). For me, when I wake up it's as if I hadn't slept at all; I feel like hell after I use it.
