LoTR-The Two Towers: Book discussion (The Green Dragon Inn) III

Posted on 07/26/2002 11:29:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Green Dragon Inn

This is a chapter discussion of The Two Towers, volume two of the Lord of the Rings. It is a continuation of our discussion of Lord of the Rings that started with Fellowship of the Ring and finished a few weeks back. FoTR discussion thread.

We will cover one section of the book per week. Sometimes short, related chapters may be combined, and the process may evolve as we go to keep everybody happy! If you are joining late, jump right in, but please stick to the chapter currently being discussed. We should be a bit careful with topic and spoilers (especially if we are joined by some reading for the first time) but feel free to draw lines related to other events in the story. If you do misbehave too much you will be sent to Took's Corner. As always, if you want to chit-chat or share other news… I would probably be best to post that in The Hobbit Hole thread.

It is OK this time to share images from the Two Towers (that illustrate the current chapter of course!) They are fun snapshots that show our story coming to life. Use your head, we don't want to slow down the thread too much, but most of us love a few pics in the thread.

Every week I will ping you to the new chapter or section …. Let me know if you would like to be on - or off - this list. I will serve as the Thain of the list.

So lets read, listen and become inspired by the many aspects of The Lord of the Rings that touch us deeply and reconnect us to the values we aspire to. Many great discussions have already been had, and I hope that this thread will produce even more. Many FReepers have wonderful things to say about LoTR, whether the fantasy reconnects them with their faith, with their relationships with friends and family, or simply illustrates the splendor of great acts of heroism and sacrifice in the constant battle of virtue versus corruption.

Besides, we Tolkien fans need something to keep us busy while we wait for the film to come out December 19. This thread will adjust the schedule as necessary to be finished before the film comes out!

LOL: I've always thought it was Orthanc and Cirith Ungol. Which two is it???

You are right. I just never placed much importance on Cirith Ungul... True, it is where the activity is in TTT, but the real enemy is in Barad-dûr. I never gave it a lot of thought, just assumed wrong.

hehehe - but in the trailer, Jackson also has it wrong. Gandalf in the first trailer (Galadriel in the Second) says "there is a union now between the two towers, Orthanc, and Barad-dûr..." I bet it gets corrected before the film comes out.

The only reason I thought Cirith Ungol was because it appeared in that volume (where the action was) -- I was thinking shallow, which was apparently the right thing to do!

Although... maybe not... The Two Towers pictured in the poster are Orthanc and Barad-dûr, maybe they will just run with it. It is a distinction that will not matter to most folk. And may just confuse them.

I'll take that bet. Loser has to read Shane (or whatever book PJ-Comix has his minions reading) and post a review of it on PJ's reading club thread. ;^)

Hey, I didn't ping anybody but you. If PJ is lurking over here and comments on the thread then we will know that he is really a closet SF/Fantasy reader.

I posted my offer before I had read your next post. I wouldn't have made the offer if I had read it. So you don't have to take the bet.

To answer a previous question of yours, I think I would have gone after Merry & Pippen. They were probably in the most danger and needed the most immediate assistance. It still would have been a tough decision.

Aahh, he draws comic strips. He HAS to have a sense of humor. ;^) and besides, I thought picking Shane as the lead off book was pretty funny.

But if Frodo and Sam fail, then saving M&P will be for naught. The whole show will crash and burn anyway. On the other hand, they may be able to sneak in better with fewer footprints. It's a tough one alright!

OK - now I am really off!

Why? Sauron was defeated once before when he had the Ring? Why couldn't he have been defeated again with the Ring? I understand it would have been a lot more painful and caused a lot more destruction, but couldn't it have been done? After all Narsil was reforged and there was soon to be a king in Gondor again.

However, I think that Took's Corner is actually in a tavern.

Great stuff Hair!

I never really was part of the discussion on FOTR, so maybe I'll join the freepers for the TTT analysis.

Oh it makes me tired just thinkin about it! It is all so scary! - Can't we just go home to the Shire and forget the whole thing?

The first part of TTT really drives me nuts. Much as I love the rest of the company, I worry so about Frodo and Sam, and we go so long without news!
