Flash: The New York Yankees just announced that George Steinbrenner has bought the entire American League. The League will now operate as the Yankees farm system, all players subject to call up.
To: jern
Steinbrenner thinks the Yankees have a divine right to win the World Series every year. They go out and grab up whomever is available whether they need them or not. Their strategy is to suck the air out of baseball's players market, denying competitors the services of needed players.
If Bud Selig is concerned about he "inequity" of competition within MLB, he needs to fold the Yankees, not the Twins and Expos.

Well, good. I have one of Raul Mondesi's autographed Rookie of the Year bats that I picked up when he was a Dodger. To be honest, I wasn't aware of what happened to him after he left that club (I have only a casual interest in baseball).
This will probably increase the value of that bat. It certainly has to be a better investment than WorldCom stock.

Talk about buy low/sell high. This means that the Blue Jays basically traded away Shawn Green for Sean Wiggins. Ouch.

He's a cancer to any team. I can only hope he does for Yankee team chemistry what he did to L.A. and Toronto's. Hehehe.

I am not sure that this move actually helps the Yankees any on the field. Mondesi's 736 OPS is nothing special. And not that the cost matters to the Yankees, but to me it looks like they just gave away some money and whatever they traded to get Mondesi without doing anything to improve their team.

All you whining Yankee Haters are simply envious. The problem is, none of you seem to have a memory past 1996...The year of the Yankees first World Series Championship in this current run.
The Yankees SUCKED for a LOT of years with George Steinbrenner at the helm. They SUCKED for a LOT of years while trying to "Buy" a Championship as some of you on this thread mistakingly state they have done.
How do you explain that???
I'll tell you how...They NOW have the best organization in baseball...PERIOD! They excell at EVERYTHING...Including MAKING MONEY!!! GASP! They don't "Buy" players, they "Develop" them, for the most part...Or, they use that wealth of minor league talent to trade for them.
On this current roster I can think of, off the top of my head, TWO players they have "Purchased". I'll bet you clowns didn't know that, did you? Those two? GREAT players, no doubt...Jason Giambi and Mike Musina.
The rest???
Bernie Williams...Farm System
Derek Jeter...Farm System
Soriano...Farm System
Jorge Posada...Farm System
Andy Pettitt...Farm System
Mariano Rivera...Farm System
Roger Clemens...Trade
So face it..The Yankees are simply GOOD! Stop your whining! This is Free Republic for God's Sake!!!
Signed...A Lifetime Yankee Fan stuck in Indiana!

OK...Here's the scoop on Mondesi...
Personally, I'm not real excited about it. I'm a HUGE Yankee Fan and the one thing I admire most about this squad (Over the past few years) is how it's built on "Character". No team has more. Mondesi doesn't really fit that mold.
BUT!!!
I'm not as smart as Brian Cashman and Brian Cashman has brought me 4 World Titles in the last 6 years. I trust him...DUH!!
What Mondesi DOES bring us is OUTSTANDING defense in Right Field...Simply OUTSTANDING. His bat (15 HR's so far this season) is a bonus as far as I'm concerned.
And think about this...With Mondesi in Right Field, and Rondell White in left (Who has 9 HR's this season) we'll soon have NINE STARTING PLAYERS WITH DOUBLE DIGIT HOME RUNS!!!
That is simply unheard of!
GO YANKS!
