Snap-off bra is a magnet for men
The Times (U.K.) ^ | 06/29/2002 | Charles Bremner

AFTER eight decades of fumbling with hooks on brassieres, French women are being offered a technical breakthrough — a soutien-gorge that fastens with magnets and undoes with a twist.

The gesture is so easy that it should transform the lives of the 80 per cent of women who put their bras on back to front and then pull them around, the makers say.

The makers, Bolero, also see advantages for the Gallic male: no more struggling with le crochet récalcitrant. “Men have always found the fastening system to be barbaric,” a spokeswoman said.

Georges Chetochine, a behavioural consultant who advised Bolero, said that Frenchmen felt a loss of virility if they stumbled while performing l’art du decrochage. “Our study showed that the bra fastener posed a problem. It takes time,” he said. “The man gets annoyed and embarrassed. Then the women gets irritated too, so she takes it off herself. The man is no longer the conquering male.”

The small magnets, which form a flat gold rectangle, have been tested to ensure that they posed no threat to health or mobile telephones.

The flimsy black construction, which will cost about £35 when it reaches the shops in the autumn, elicited mixed reactions from men and women when road-tested in the Place de l’Opéra, near The Times’s office. “This is wonderful for women. It’s incredibly easy compared to hooks and I’m going to start putting my bra on the right way round,” Sophie, 27, a secretary, said.

But 22-year-old Frédérique said she feared that magnets would take away the charm for men. “There will no longer be the desire that comes with patience. The gift wrapping is too easily undone.”

Sandrine, a sales assistant, said: “Sometimes it’s fun to see a man panic over a bra.”

As fate would have it, Pardek is always associated with females who share his sick sense of humor.

When my first girlfriend gave me the visual cue to "go there", I proceeded with much difficulty - tugging and twisting with no luck.

Eventually she started to feel pity and burst out laughing.

She purposely wore a bra that clasped between the cups!

On a separate but related issue...I have noticed numerous techniques of lacing (and un-lacing) corsets and boots...perhaps this also needs further investigation.

No doubt the Euroweenies have an ISO9000 standard for corsets and boots...the propper lacing off

Now why do they spend all their time worrying about better bra fasteners when they still can't get their women to shave or use deodorant? I mean, what's the point of vacuuming out the car if you're missing two quarter panels and the hood?

If the man's been doing his job correctly he doesn't have to unfasten the Bra. She will have it hitting the floor before he gets the chance.

I was always impressed by the women who could remove the bra while retaining their outer garment, ala Flashdance

I understand the technique you describe. However, if one is familar with the bra's calsp mechanism, it's possible to simply squeeze the material around the clasp and hook(s) and voila! The thing simply flies off!

I am amazed that it took 35 posts before someone finally mentioned the universally preferred technique: Squeeze and Release.

that is so wierd ... i don't have a t.v.; haven't had one for decades, but ... i stayed at a motel the other night that had one, and ... guess what i watched?

yes. that ONE scene from flashdance. kept it on for a minute or two, 'cause i was hoping to see that scene with the bucket of water ...

twenty years it's been. and i still remember that. it was hot, jennifer, really hot, and you're really not all that great looking, y'know?

I haven't fumbled with a bra clasp since I was a teenager.

I'm so smooth that the gal usually doesn't Even know I've done it until her goodies tumble loose. One hand, of course.

FreeRepublic is a strange place. Over on one thread I am being bashed as a Libertarian libertine by the holier-than-thou crowd, and over hear it is bra removal 101.

I'd rather take my own bra off, swing it around with one finger - like a lasso - and then let it fly!
