I found Mandrake to be the easiest to install and to start using.
Once you've figured out how to use Linux, and decided which windows manager you want to use, etc - then you'll be more likely to know which distro you'd find most useful.

Thanks. I've seen Mandrake retail boxes at the local Wal Mart for around $29.97. I'm guessing that the install must be easy if Wally World is selling it! So would you say that the main differences in the types of Linux are really the "presentation" (a.k.a. desktop managers) and all the background is basically the same?
