Thanks for the report. We all were thrilled with the lovely Anita Baker!

I'm not surprised at the poor manners of the younger set, unfortunately, as I've seen worse on the part of the college students in my town and at my husband's place of employment. For a generation brought up eating hamburgers, french fries and pizza, anything exotic (and requiring cutlery) is cause for confusion. Why they weren't taught not to hold their forks and spoons like gardening implements is beyond me, however.

Those fires are so devastating. I have a friend that lives in Aurora, Colorado,(10 miles south of Denver) she's been calling me everyday with updates. These fires with all their smoke have really done a number on her Asthma, she can barely get to the mailbox without gagging. Pray for rain, they need it.

I have a question for you Mr. Vice President;
Since most of the problems we have in this country were caused by government interference in civil society, why do you and the President advocate more government interference to fix the problems it has caused?

Here's one for you....if they win the Senate, will he recommend to Bush a MAJOR cut in capital gains taxes, say to 10% or less? And will they push for permanent tax cuts?

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have made the 100th post, and the absolute first one that had a question for the VP!!!

I give up.

Way to go West Virginia! They caught that Salt Lake City vagrant, Brett Michael Edmonds, in a W. Virginia clinic today! Pray this leads to some resolution in the case. If he's anywhere near you, why don't you bop on over and bop him on the head?!

You'll love Scotland! The Aberdeen area is one of the most affluent. (My ancestors all got shoved further and further west, ending up in the Outer Hebrides, Isle of Barra.) I love the Highlands. Most tourists don't spend much time up there, which is nice.

I finally figured out how to get the Guild threads to show up where it's easy to find them...I've been Guild deprived! Have been so busy with Coast Guard Auxiliary these days I only have time for a whirlwind pass through the basics: The Guild, Canteen, and Day in the Life....everything any pearl-wearing pilot needs, right?

It's fabulous to have you back! Lodwick's button has really helped our old friends come back to visit. Folks forget how much news and information we cram into this thread everyday.

Now we need to lobby FOX News to give us our own hour.

alas, they caught the SLC fugitive in the other panhandle of WV - at least 5 hours away - or I'd be hot on the story.

I'm not buying this for an instant:

SOME unattached women don't have to worry about a man-shortage. Supermodel Naomi Campbell has flipped for a close advisor to Bill Clinton, Mariah Carey has her sights set on R&B romeo Tyrese, and Natalie Portman is sweet on hunky young actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Campbell has been cavorting with Doug Band, a lawyer who serves as a close advisor to the former horndog-in-chief. They met in Austria several months ago when Clinton spoke at an AIDS fund-raiser, and have been spotted together at hotspots like Bungalow 8 and Serafina.

"Naomi has finally met her match with Doug," reports a source, who says Band's randy reputation rivals that of Campbell. "He's got someone in every port." Page Six.

Oooh, Washington, D.C. gossip:

• Those zany folks at National Public Radio's "Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me!" are so excited about the pending November nuptials of White House press secretary Ari Fleischer and budget staffer Rebecca Davis that yesterday they logged onto the couple's Target store gift registry and purchased a lovely $9.99 bundt cake pan -- with gift-wrapping and shipping costs, an $18.94 value.

"Anytime a bald Jewish guy -- and I'm one myself -- manages to get a nice girl, it's cause for celebration," the quiz show's host, Peter Sagal, told us.

Fleischer responded: "I'm flattered, and we'll see if the ethics office -- which prohibits me receiving gifts from people I don't know -- is similarly flattered."

• What leverage did Democratic House hopeful Fred DuVal use with Tipper Gore to get her to spend two hot, grueling days this week raising as much as $15,000 for him in Arizona's 1st Congressional District? Sure, the candidate loyally supported Al Gore's presidential quest a couple of years ago, but the ex-veep is already sponsoring a fundraiser for him in Washington next week.

The Post's Juliet Eilperin reports that by sheer coincidence, the luxurious, canyon-sheltered Mii amo spa at Enchantment Resort is conveniently located in Sedona. Yesterday, Mrs. Gore spent her second day in the land of crystal baths, blue corn body polish and smoothing-stone massages.

Said Jay Thorne, DuVal's campaign manager, "Her commitment to Fred is deep, but there's no doubt a couple of days at a spa helped encourage her to tour around rural Arizona -- which is a hot and dusty place right now."
