Jim,

It's your forum so do what you want, but you aren't getting another dime from me until you fire your moderators!

This smells like conspiracy and looks like conspiracy Jim.

Paid or not paid, fire your moderators now!

Do you agree that there are those like what I've described?

Perhaps, but I don't think "failure to adapt to change" is a primary factor.
Granted, the "old days" of the Internet may have been more unmoderated and free-wheelin' and dealin', but there were also a lot fewer people online, and people could have intelligent discussion without need for moderators. Nowadays, there's simply a larger number of adolescent jerks online.

I caught the very beginning of that thread yesterday, but I can't find it today. Do you happen to remember the title?

Yes sir, no one could take the wind out of the sails of the elitists faster than old Bert.

Ain't that the truth. Bert's birthday is Aug. 16th, and I believe he turned 75 last year. I didn't agree with him on a few things, but I believe he was a WWII and Korean War vet, which should always command respect. He's funny, independant, and a real kick in the butt.

He became a high school history teacher after retiring from the military and said he chose his name "A+Bert" because his name was Bert and he gave himself an A+. He is a salty old dog, and I miss him.

Hi kayak,

That poem is actually the entire set of lyrics from "Without You" - Eliza Doolittle's "opus" to Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady." She was magnificently, formidiably and righteously furious. Great song.

I never saw any evidence of that.

You aren't sophisticated enough to recognize that fact.

I dunno - I can think of a couple of things about the "good old days" that weren't that great - like when you'd spend 15 minutes composing a reasoned reply to a legitimate question only to find out later that the entire thread had been deleted because some bonehead couldn't keep his mouth out of the potty. The new system is certainly an improvement over that!

Then there was that group of twits who tried to bomb the forum with the scrolling picture of Jesus...and Eschoir, of course...and Toiletman, he'd have to have his own separate category...do I miss that? Only a little...

I haven't read most of the posts, but wanted to weigh in with my own thoughts:

1) I like the idea that cursing, harassing, and vile flaming is kept to a minimal, if not eliminated. No place for thoughtful discussion.

However,

2) I am not at all happy at the content deletion, particularly when critical of F.R. For example, I recently noticed that the Just A Lot Of Talk website, which provided links to conservative talk shows, shut down its site, with a letter saying the operator was a former FReeper who had been banned for some unknown reason. When I posted it for discussion (and I'm sure I wasn't the only one), it was immediately yanked. IMHO, absolutely no place for that. We're not stupid, stinking liberals from D.U. (or even Lucianne) who can't take criticism. Or at least, we shouldn't be.

Just my two cents.

Yes, there is no doubt that forum management software has become more sophisticated over the years.

If one were to go back into the FR archives,
no doubt you'd find countless threads where
FReepers were blastin' those danged italians.

You don't see that very much anymore, either.

I couldn't agree more. Well put.

I do understand that leaving up profanity or racist posts leads some avenue for critics to of the forum to cite them as authorized, so their deletion is understandable.

What I really object to is the deletion of posts or threads for political or ideological reasons.

Or most offensive of all are the deletions for no obvious reason, and if you question the deletion, the "we might have to ban you" response from the almighty moderators on high.

That's the site to which I referred above. I wonder, though, if one really is classy, is it necessary to tell everyone else?
