The New Hobbit Hole

Welcome to The New Hobbit Hole

Concerning Hobbits

The New Hobbit Chronicles

This is a continuation of the infamous thread New Zealander Builds Hobbit Hole originally posted on January 26, 2001 by John Farson, who at the time undoubtedly thought he had found a rather obscure article that would elicit a few replies and die out. Without knowing it, he became the founder of the Hobbit Hole. For reasons incomprehensible to some, the thread grew to over 4100 replies. It became the place for hobbits and friends of hobbits to chit chat and share LoTR news and views, hang out, and talk amongst ourselves in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

In keeping with the new posting guidelines, the thread idea is continuing here, as will the Green Dragon Inn, our more structured spin-off thread, as soon as we figure out how to move all the good discussion that has been had there. As for the Hobbit Hole, we will just start fresh, bringing only a few mathoms such as the picture above with us to make it feel like home, and perhaps a walk down memory lane:

Our discussion has been light:

It very well may be that a thread named "New Zealander builds Hobbit hole" will end up being the longest Tolkien thread of them all, with some of the best heartfelt content... Sorry John, but I would have rather it had been one with a more distinguished title!… post 252 - HairOfTheDog

However, I can still celebrate, with quiet dignity, the fact that what started as a laugh about some wacko in New Zealand has mutated and grown into a multifaceted discussion of the art, literature, and philosophy that is Tolkien. And now that I've managed to write the most pompous sentence of my entire life, I agree, Rosie… post 506 - JenB

Hah! I was number 1000!! (Elvish victory dance... wait, no; that would be too flitty) … post 1001 - BibChr

Real men don't have to be afraid of being flitty! Go for it. – post 1011 – HairOfTheDog

Seventeen years to research one mystical object seems a bit excessive… post 1007 - JenB

Okay...who's the wise guy who didn't renew Gandalf's research grant?… post 1024 – Overtaxed

To the very philosophical:

…Judas Iscariot obviously was a good man, or he wouldn't have been chosen to be one of the Apostles. He loved Jesus, like all of the Apostles, but he betrayed him. Yet without his betrayal, the Passion and Crucifixion would never have occurred, and mankind would not have been redeemed. So without his self-destruction infinite good would not have been accomplished. I certainly do not mean this to be irreverant but it seems to me that this describes the character of Gollum, in the scenes so movingly portrayed above… Lucius Cornelius Sulla

To fun but heartfelt debates about the integrity and worth of some of the characters…

…Anyone else notice how Boromir treats the hobbits? He's very fond of them but he seems to think of them as children - ruffling Frodo's hair, calls them all 'little ones'. He likes them, but I don't think he really respects them… post 1536 - JenB

Yes... Tolkien told us not to trust Boromir right off the bat when he began to laugh at Bilbo, until he realized that the Council obviously held this hobbit in high esteem. What a pompous dolt… post 1538 - HairOfTheDog

…I think almost every fault of his can be traced directly back to his blindness to anything spiritual or unseen. He considers the halflings as children, because that is what they look like. He considers the only hope of the ring to be in taking it and using it for a victory in the physical realm. He cannot see what the hobbits are truly made of, he cannot see the unseen hope of what the destruction of the ring might mean--the destruction of Sauron himself, and he cannot see the unseen danger that lies in the use of the ring itself… I just feel sorry for Boromir--he is like a blind but honorable man, trying to take the right path on the road but missing the right path entirely because he simply cannot see it… post 1548 - Penny1

Boromir isn't a jerk, he's a jock… post 2401 – Overtaxed

-----------------------------------------

Oh, I think by the time Frodo reaches the Cracks, he's not even himself anymore! I think he's not only on the brink of a dangerous place physically, he's on the brink of losing himself completely during the exchange with Gollum. But for some reason, the take-over isn't complete till he actually has to throw the Ring in. The person speaking to Gollum is not Frodo, but the "Wheel of Fire" that Sam sees. After the Ring is destroyed, Frodo not only comes back to himself, but comes back with the unbearable (to him) knowledge of what it's like to be completely without compassion. I think that's why it's so important to him to be compassionate in the Shire… post 2506 - 2Jedismom

…Regarding Frodo's compassion... it's a little too much at the end. Even Merry tells him that he's going to have to quit being so darn nice. But you're right. He's learned a lesson about evil that very few ever learn since it wasn't an external lesson but an internal one. (Those kinds of lessons have the greatest impact) Not only did he totally succumb to it, but he was rather ruthless to my little Smeagol… post 2516 - carton253

Well that Frodo was a big mean bully! (to Smeagol)… post 2519 – Overtaxed

So as you can see, everything JRR Tolkien (and Peter Jackson) is welcome here in our New Row, our soon-to-be familiar New Hobbit Hole…; philosophy, opinion, good talk and frequent silliness.

Points have to be made sometimes.

Taking away his Playstation made a major point. His school provides an "Agenda" for all students. Basically a day-timer with important school info, calendar, etc. We are now requiring that he show it to his teachers every day to make sure he has written his assignments down correctly. Then we sign it every night.

It's been a little difficult getting off to a good start with the school year. My wife handles most of that because he's home at 2:30 and I'm not home until almost six most days. But with her new teaching schedule, we've been inconsistent. I think we have a handle on things now.

At least he knows we're serious about this.

BTW - I understand you're worrying about your grandparents. But Montgomery County is a huge place. We'll hope and pray they'll be okay.

Well, I thought Corin liked to communicate by pictures. So, in answer to his question, I couldn't say anything at all, so....."Mum's the word....."

Get it?

Mum's the word.... you know like being quiet....not saying anything? In otherwords I think Corin is being perfectly reasonable by not going.

Maybe I should have posted two mums side by side, or one of the Queen Mum and a chrysanthemum side by side....

Oh, I'm sorry Hair, it's been a very weird roller coaster day. But I don't think you need to worry about my sanity quite yet....

LOL! Yeah, I can see how the queen mum staring at you out of the blue could be a little guilt inducing! She is the Queen Mum after all.....

But seriously, you don't have anything to worry about from me. I have been politely refraining from commenting about your family issues because, well, because I don't think it's any of my business, and I recognize that I wouldn't know any better way of coping than you are already doing. I dread the days my kids turn teenaged. My oldest just turned 11 and the younger one will be 9 in May. So when I hear people like yourself talking about those types of issues, I am all ears and very non-judgemental because I know I will be there soon myself. I just pray for the grace to be able to handle it capably when my turn comes. As I think you are doing now....

Thanks. Sometimes I feel like I'm the resident whiner in the Hobbit Hole. But then I get a lot of comfort and good advice from you guys.

I liked that pic! God save our something queen/something or something else/who ripped off this tune anyway?

Ouch, database class is painfully. Better yet, we have a test here next week. Still more wonderful, I have a test in Programming Languages that Tuesday! There goes my weekend. And think I was thinking of signing up for NaNoWriMo!

National Novel Writing Month, a bunch of my friends are doing it... hmm... actually, that's November, not this month, I think...

God save our something queen/something or something else/who ripped off this tune anyway?

first publicly performed in London, 1745

1. God save our gracious Queen, Long live our noble Queen, God save the Queen! Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us; God save the Queen!

2. O Lord our God arise, Scatter her enemies And make them fall; Confound their politics, Frustrate their knavish tricks, On Thee our hopes we fix, God save us all!

3. Thy choicest gifts in store On her be pleased to pour; Long may she reign; May she defend our laws, And ever give us cause To sing with heart and voice, God save the Queen!

4. Not in this land alone, But be God's mercies known, From shore to shore! Lord make the nations see, That men should brothers be, And form one family, The wide world over.

5. From every latent foe, From the assassins blow, God save the Queen! O'er her thine arm extend, For Britain's sake defend, Our mother, prince, and friend, God save the Queen!

6. Lord grant that Marshal Wade May by thy mighty aid Victory bring. May he sedition hush, And like a torrent rush, Rebellious Scots to crush. God save the King!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This Text and Tune is often credited to Henry Carey, 1740, although there is controversy with many votes, including the British monarchy's, for anonymous. On official occasions, only the first verse is usually sung, and occasionally verse 3. The tune has been used by many countries for anthems and hymns. According to the French encyclopaedia, Quid, the music is by Giam Battista Lulli (Jean-Baptiste Lully in the French form). It was loosely based on a hymn sung when the (French) king arrived at an event, Domine Salvum Fac Regem. When Louis XIV was scheduled to open the educational institution at St-Cyr (1686), his mistress (later, queen), the Marquise de Maintenon, commissioned Lully to write the tune to be sung by the pupils as Dieu Protège le Roi. The French, apparently, did not use it again until 1745 at which time the Old Pretender, claiming to be King James III of England, was organising his rebellion from France (he lived at St-Germain-de-Laye). Madame de Maintenon presented him with the words and music as his National Anthem. (It is not clear who wrote the English words but the implication is that Mme de Maintenon either wrote them herself or commissioned them.) The song was sung for the first time in Britain when Bonnie Prince Charlie landed in Scotland. There are apparently some legal testaments to this story.

I happen to be an Anglophile, having lived a (formative) year in England, but I also love the Scots, Irish, and Welsh... I would love to have the time to be able to write a novel. Well, okay, maybe the talent would be nice too.... Go for it Jen!

Time is the problem. I have ideas out the wazoo; I have a hundred-page start to a novel but got writers' block, and new ideas hit me all the time. Like the sleight-of-hand magician who ends up in a world with real magic, or the band of space fighter pilots who find out their real enemy isn't out there...

I have a few ideas, too. And I think a little skill at turning a phrase from time to time. But it is my left brained overly disciplined perfectionism that sinks me every time. I need a huge block of time to just brainstorm and regurgitate all the stuff floating around in my head in order to let it pass through some sort of seive, through which I can sort later for the few nuggets of real gold which I believe would be there.

But to find the time! Alas, time is money, as they say, and my family needs the money, and they need my time as well. But I really would love to find out sometime just what those nuggets would be.....
