What is ammonium sulfide ?

I'm trying to help neighbor find out what his 17 old would be doing with several ampules of ammonium sulfide.

From what i've been able to find on the net this is not a very safe thing for teens, or anyone without experience to have.

Hydrogen sulfide is the "rotten-egg" smell of decomposing protein. Aitch-two-ess is also used in analytical chemistry as a test for the presence of certain metallic ions in a solution (don't ask me, this bit of knowledge was gained 40 years ago), and the stuff is flammable in the presence of oxygen. It is soluble in water, heavier than air, and is noxious in concentrations of only a few hundred parts per million. It is probably safer to breath gasoline fumes, but nobody, so far as I know, has ever breathed in enough hydrogen sulfide to get a high from doing so. Nausea is much more likely.

Are you sure you aren't referring to "sodium thiosulfate?"

In a b/w darkroom, it was commonly called "fixer."

It smelled sour, but not nearly as bad as "rotten eggs."

H2s is deadly,it can kill real quick,sometimes kids just don't know what can kill them.

H2S + H2O = H2SO4

breath enough of it and it "makes" H2SO4 inside your body and can be fatal

hydrogen sulfide,better known as H2S is poison and highly flammable,it can kill in a few seconds and ignights very easily.

Assuming you could keep anyone near it long enough to get a lethal dose. People are disgusted by it at the part-per-million level. These ammonium polysulfide ampules have been sold in joke shops for decades. They are used for clearing out study halls, and for delicatley placing under toilet seats, etc.

You do not have a Columbine Kid..you have someone who was a kid like I was! You could do worse, though it would be nice to find out what his intended target was...if it was beyond the practical joke stage, that would not be too funny.

Many a rough neck has been killed by hydrogen sulfide,in higher concentrations it desenticises(sp) the ability to smell,anything over 10 PPM supplied breathing air is required.Sulpheric acid in a car battery produces H2S when it undergoes charging because it is being heated,alluminun sulfide might act as a catalyst to release the hydrgen in sulphuric acid,not for sure,anyways,sometime harmless chemicals mixed with other somewhat harmless chemical can be extremely dangerous,just like bleach and ammonia.

Hydrogen sulfide is "sewer gas", an overwhelming rotten egg smell as a trace gas and highly toxic in moderate concentrations.

It's a stink bomb stuff. The H₂S is toxic, but no one will stand it long enough for deleterious effect. It will give folks a bad headache if they're forced to endure it, or immediately if they're already sensitized to it.

It's a reducing agent and is also used to precipitate heavy metals from solution. It's of no use in any kind of drug production.

It takes 4 times as much cyanide to kill you as it does hydrogen sulfide.

The first thing that happens after you smell H₂S, is that it begins to anesthetize your sense of smell for it. That's why they call it "sneaky gas" in the oil fields.

Lethal concentrations will only be detectable by smell for a few seconds.

Sodiun thiosulfate is used as a reducing agent in photo developing. Sulfides are not.
