sulfur dioxide + water = sulfurous acid (not sulfuric)

2SO₂ + O₂ = 2SO₃

sulfur dioxide + oxygen = sulfur trioxide

SO₃ + H₂O = H₂SO₄

sulfur trioxide + water = sulfuric acid
