Neil Young sues Trump over use of 'Rockin' in a Free World' at Ohio campaign rally

The song "Rockin' in a Free World," according to the filing, aims to capture the irony of "celebrating freedom that clearly isn't shared by all," which is “the opposite of everything that Donald J. Trump stands for.”

=================================================================

Musician Neil Young filed a $10 million lawsuit against the Trump 47 Committee on Monday, claiming copyright infringement for its use of "Rockin' in a Free World" at a campaign rally.

In the filing, Young alleges that his 1989 hit was played just before President Donald Trump took the stage at a Youngstown, Ohio, rally on Oct. 12, The Hill reported.

According to the lawsuit, the song is a “blistering anthem that contrasts the hollow promises of American political rhetoric with the harsh realities faced by the poor, homeless and forgotten.”

The song, according to the filing, aims to capture the irony of "celebrating freedom that clearly isn't shared by all," which is “the opposite of everything that Donald J. Trump stands for.”

Young has previously filed copyright infringement claims when the Trump campaign has used his songs.

Look he either CAN or CAN’T use the song at his rallies. Do we really need lawsuits to answer the question? Loser pays would solve the bigger issue and would prevent them too.

Neil Young needs to be slapped down hard for this baseless lawsuit. Once he sold the rights to his songs, filing a lawsuit to stop someone from using a song he no has the rights to is fraud.

I’m surprised that Neil Young has not outlived his copyright already. Didn’t he attend Keith Richards’ baptism?

Just remember Neil, as Ronnie Van Zant sang, “a Southern man don’t need you around.” Idiot. Never cared for him.

Canadians can have opinions? Doesn’t this scam end up being just like free advertising?

These singers never complain when Democrats use their music at their rallies.

From what I understand these singers sell the rights to their music. And then anyone can pay the royalties and use it? Is that how it works? Because if so legally, there’s no basis for any lawsuit here.

Evidently, he only sold half of the rights and still maintains control of how the music is licensed..

If you’re not using the song for financial benefit, you don’t have to pay any royalties. Neil Young or anyone cannot stop people from playing their songs ANYWHERE, including a kid’s birthday party.

Springsteen was unhappy about Reagan citing or using “Born in the USA.” There’s something to be said for singers taking offense over politicians misusing their songs, but Reagan and Trump were both paid-up SAG(-AFTRA) members and part of the entertainment business themselves. Should there be a “fair use” rule for politicians who are in the guild?

I hope Neil Young will remember,

According to Algore’s amazing internet —

Neil Young’s 2020 copyright infringement lawsuit against Donald J. Trump for President Inc. was settled and dismissed with prejudice. The settlement included a promise that the campaign would never again use “Rockin’ in the Free World” without a license and permission from Young.

This followed Young’s public objection in 2015 when the song was first used at Trump’s presidential announcement rally, which also led to the campaign ceasing its use of the track at that time.
