States With Highest — and Lowest — Crime Rates

FBI statistics reveal which states lead in violent and property crime, while Washington, D.C., outpaces them all.

In August of this year, the FBI released its final state and local crime statistics for 2025. I was unable to find any online articles ranking states by violent crime and property crime based on the new numbers, so I did it myself in hopes that some AT readers might find it interesting or useful. All the information can be accessed at the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer site, then “Documents and Downloads,” then “Crime in the U.S. Annual Reports,” then “2025 CIUS Estimations,” which include “Table 5 Crime in the U.S. by State 2025.”

For 2025, Alaska, New Mexico, and Arkansas maintained their 2024 win, place, and show standings as the three highest per capita violent crime states. For property crime, New Mexico, Colorado, and Oregon also maintained their 2024 laurels as the three states with the highest per capita property crimes.

Woebegone New Mexico maintained its first-place finish in the combined violent crime and property crime category. Also on this year’s top three list were Alaska and Colorado. The three states with the lowest total combined crime totals were Idaho, New Hampshire, and Maine.

As bad as crime is in a number of states, the states are pikers compared to the stats from Washington, D.C. Our nation’s capital had a violent crime rate of 803 and a property crime rate of 3,132.3 per 100,000. The combined total of 3,935.3 is over 1,000 points higher than the abysmal numbers for New Mexico.

No surprises except Montana, why is it so high on the list?

Some will say red states have the highest crime rates, the lowest are blue states.

The voters make the mess, which is why the left changed the immigration laws to replace the voting population of states like New Mexico.

I stopped using the FBI Crime Database from 2020 to 2024 because Leftist states stopped voluntarily sending data to is, skewing the data.

I guess I might try visiting it again.

We stress to liberal young extended family members just how miserably hot and cold North Texas can be.

Reported or actual?

As always, DC should be compared to other cities, not states.

In addition, because DC’s size is constitutionally fixed, it was never able to annex the close-in urban areas that would be part of most cities. A metro area to metro area comparison is necessary.

As in most cities, crime in DC is heavily concentrated. Situational awareness is always important, but most of DC is quite safe.

Beware of any area in close proximity to public housing projects.

Highest crime rates are in all 50 biggest cities in the country. Further out from the cities, the crime rates drop, even in suburbs. Suburbs of chicago further out from the city have low crime rates.

Good points. I wonder how many blue cities fudge the numbers to make real comparisons impossible?

Well in Missouri’s case; the majority of the crime is in the Big, Blue citys of St. Louis and Kansas City. The rest of the state is quite safe.

“”””Good points. I wonder how many blue cities fudge the numbers to make real comparisons impossible?””””

Other issues to considerr-—

1. Prosecuting Attorneys who intentionally fail to prosecute a reported crime.

2. Probabtion Diversion Programs where a convicted criminal gets to expunge the crime if the successfully complete probation.

3. Police who intentionally fail to apprehend a criminal who committed a crime in their presence. I am thinking about high speed car chases where the police stop pursuing the fleeing driver.

There are probably numerous other examples of where crimes are intentionally underreported.
