Since I don’t speak Russian, I got mothing from his efforts. Fr I don’t know which handgrenade was better. One didn’t work when he threw it in the pit. He went and retrieved it. Seems he didn’t pull the pin.

Actually, the Russian is pretty simple: if you listen, you'll hear "nasha" - "ours" and "Amerikansky" - "American". That, and if you spend at least a little time in the ground services, the grenades are readily distinguishable.

It's a lousy test in that all you get out of it is the explosions in a pit - no arena test where you get to see the spread and penetrating power of each grenade's fragments.

Our M-26 grenades are so effective, that you couldn't throw one on open ground with getting hit by your own fragments.

Having grown up watching "war" movies, the first time I saw a hand grenade go off, I was shocked how big an explosion it made. It's about the size of a the blast of the typical arty round shown in the movies of the 50s & 60s. I also grew up thinking the "pinapple" hand grenade was the more modern development because the shell is obviously meant to come apart in (lethal) segments. Turns out the "baseball" has internal segmentation to achieve the same end.

The pinapple threw bigger but fewer chunks which, being heavier, remained lethal for a greater distance but gave more sporadic coverage. The baseball grenade throws smaller chunks that provide better coverage but remain lethal for a shorter distance, so they're less likely to bite the guy who threw it. Both of which I suppose are better suited to the infantryman's objectives.

This was shot as best as I can remember at 1 million fps. I only made the screen shots up to the point that it was obvious how the casing would be coming apart.

In the second image (from left) you can see the internal texture because the intense heat inside it is producing a light so strong it shines through the casing. Which allows you to see how fine it's segmentation is compared to the pineapple grenade. It obviously throws smaller bits of shrapnel in a more uniform pattern.
