7,300 years after a massive eruption, this Japanese supervolcano is showing signs of life

About 7,300 years ago, Kikai produced the Kikai-Akahoya eruption, a giant event that released an estimated 133 to 183 cubic kilometers of magma in dense rock equivalent.
The eruption reshaped the landscape, sent ash across large parts of Japan and left behind a vast caldera south of Kyushu.
Now, new seismic research suggests that the magma reservoir involved in that ancient eruption is not empty.
It is being refilled.>Snip<
One of the most important findings is that the magma under Kikai is probably not simply a leftover pocket from the eruption 7,300 years ago.
Chemical studies of later volcanic rocks show that the material produced after the giant eruption has a different composition from the magma released during the Kikai-Akahoya event.
That difference matters.
It suggests that new melt has been entering the old reservoir rather than the system merely preserving ancient magma.
Researchers call this process magma re-injection: fresh molten material rises from deeper levels and refills a shallow reservoir left behind by a previous giant eruption.>Snip<
That is another clue that the volcanic system has been rebuilding.
The lava dome suggests that magma has continued to move, accumulate and sometimes reach the surface after the giant eruption.
According to the new model, at least 32 cubic kilometers of new melt may have been re-injected into the reservoir over the past 3,900 years.

This does not mean Kikai is on the verge of repeating its ancient disaster. Volcanic systems can store magma for very long periods without producing a major eruption. But the discovery shows that the caldera is not a dead remnant. It is an active geological system with a long-term magma supply.

They don’t know.
Archaeologically it has been dated around 7,300 cal. BP during the earliest stage of the Jōmon period,[14] but it had also been uncorrected radiocarbon dated to as recently as 6,500 BP.[15] The current accepted calibrated dating adjustment from multiple other sources is between 7165 and 7303 years before present.[1][2][3]

What’s 800 years between friends.
Either way, I think if the Japanese can get over it, we should too.
